SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,769, dated February 15, 1887.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM HIOKSON HAINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheldon, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hot-Air Heaters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in hot-air heaters; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of aheater embodying my improvements, the outer shell or case of the said heater being broken away to disclose the interior construction thereof. Fig. 2 isa vertical sectional view.
In Figs. 1 and 2,A represents a heatingstove, of which B is the base, 0 the fire-pot. and D the outer shell or casing, which is preferably cylindricalin shape and extends ver tically from the base, the fire-pot being located centrally in the said shell and out of contact with the sides thereof. In the upper end of the shell or casing is located a drum, E, which is closed on all sides, and has its side walls, which depend into the upper end of the shell or casing, inclined toward their lower ends and out of contact with the said shell or casing. A flange, F, extends horizontally from the drum and rests on the upper edge of the shell or casing to support the drum in position, and the upper portion of the drum, E, may be made in any desired fanciful ornamental shape, and is provided with a central opening, E, and with an annular slide, G, which encircles the upper portion of the drum, and is provided with a series of openings, g, adapted to register with or cut off a similar series of openings, 6, with which the drum is provided, by moving the said slide, as will be very readily understood.
H represents a series of vertical air pipes or fines, which extend from the base of the stove upwardly around the lire-pot, and between it and the outer shell or casing, and have their upper ends connected to the lower ends of the drum E. The lower ends of the pipe, H are open and communicate with the air of the room. The usual smoke-pipe, I, leads from the combustion-chamber to the chimney or flue, and to the upper end of the drum is attached a hot-air pipe, K, to extend to an upper apart- Serial No. 197,002. ment, for the purpose of conveying hot air thereto from the stove. The pipe K is provided with a damper, L, by means of which the hot air may be shut off from the upper apartment.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The cold air near the floor of the room in which the heater is located enters the lower ends of the pipes H and is heated therein as it passes through the said pipes and the combustion-chamber. and is discharged into the drum E, which, being located directly above the fire, superheats the air, and when the openings e in the said drum are open expels the hot air therefrom with considerable force, thus maintaining a constant circulation of air in the room and equalizing the temperature in all portions thereof. When the slide G is moved so as to close the openings 6, circula tion of air from the heater is stopped, and the latter heats the surrounding air only by radiation, as in the ordinary way. \Vhen the openings care closed and the damper L in the pipe K is open, a constant current of hot air is supplied to the upper apartment, with which the pipe K communicates.
It will be observed that the pipes H open into the drum E at the sides, leaving the bottom of the drum free. By arranging the pipes in a vertical series and connecting them with the drum the pipes are arranged out of contact with the stove-casing and the fire-pot.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a heating-stove, the combination, with the outer shell or casing, D, of the fire-pot 0, located within the shell and out of contact therewith, the hollow drum E, having a flange, F, to rest on the upper edge of the shell or casing D and support the drum, and having its side walls inclined inwardly from the top to the bottom, so as to be out of contact with the shell or casing, and the series of pipes H, having their upper ends fitted to and discharging into the sides of the drum and extending vertically down through the stove around the fire-pot, and having their lower ends opening outside of the stove, as set forth.
