IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACE HEATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,472, dated January 13, 1874; application led October 16, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. PHILLIrs, of Normal, in the county of McLean and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating Apparatus; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an open-fire heating apparatus so arranged as to combine the direct radiation of the cheerful open lire land the conduction of heat by warmed air, the object being to retain the open fire or direct radiation and to warm the extreme parts of the room in which the heater is placed, and, if desired, adjoining rooms, and to supply the heating apparat-us for this purpose with air taken either from the room or directly from out-doors.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my'invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the apparatus, broken so as to show the interior parts from thefront. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view with the top grating removed;
A represents the iire boX or back cast in one solid piece and provided with one or more conduits, a, for smoke. These conduits form part of the nre-back, and are cast with the same, making all one continuous piece of iron. This ca-sing is made in two sections, as shown, the lower section, G, being of cast-iron, and provided with an inner shoulder, y, at its top, to receive the upper section, G. rIhis latter section is made of russia-iron surmounted by a finished projection, h, which supports the open grating or register H.
By this construction of casing I am enabled to economize in both the cost and weight of the heating' apparatus. The two sections are more easily handled in shipping, and can readily be attached or detached one from the other; and in case of the burning out of `the drum or connecting-pipes, the sections can be easily taken apart and the injured parts replaced at little expense.
The smoke-drum B is made of common sheetiron with cast-iron heads. the same at a and passes out through the pipe I to the iiue or chimney.
A descending iiue may be arranged on the back of the heating apparatus in such a manner as to allow of either a direct or indirect draft being used.
