J. A. HAMPTON.

No. 599,559. Patented Feb. 22, 1898;

citizen of the United States, residing at Nor- UNITED STATES l ATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. HAMPTON, OF NORWOOD, MISSOURI.
STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,559, dated February 22, 1898.
Application filed January 1897.
To all whom it ntay concern: 7
Be it known that I, JOHN A. HAMPTON, a
wood, in the county of Wright, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stoves; and my invention consists in certain features of novelty hereinafter described, and pointed out in theclaims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a stove containing and embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 represents the same with the base and top removed and partly broken away, showing more in detail myimprovements. Fig. 3 represents a vertical cross-section on the line as a; of Fig. 2. Fig. 4. represents a horizontal cross-sectionon the Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
1 represents the base of the stove.
2 represents an outer casing, and 3 an inner casing of smaller dimensions than the outer, providing the heating-space 4 between the two.
5 represents the top of the stove, provided with the'removable cover 6, having the air or draft opening 7, provided with the draft-regulator 8.
The inner casing 3 is provided at a suitable distance from the bottom with the fire-plate 9 and immediately above said plate has the opening 10 in the side thereof. .1I represents an opening in the side of said innercasing immediately under said plate. 12 represents a series of tubes or pipes extending horizontally across said casings directly under said fire-plate 9 and vertically in the space between said casings, communicating with the atmosphere through the openings 13 in the outer casing and through the openings 14 in the top 5. 15 represents the smoke-flue, communicating with the inner casing below said fire-plate by means of the pipe 16 and provided with the elbow 17 for connection with a stovepipe in the usual manner.
The outer casing is provided near its hot- Serial No. 617,699. (No model.)
will be observed that the draft from the drafta opening 7 is downward upon and through the fuel, and the plate 9 being imperforate the draft from the fuel is outward through the side opening 10 and thence back under plate 9, across the casing, and out through the pipe 16 and smoke-flue 15. Thus the tubes 12 are constantly enveloped with the flame and heat from the fire and are heated to a high tem perature, generating and inducing constantly a current and circulation of air through the same, and by reason of such high temperature ofthe tubes and constant circulation of the air therethrough any disease-germs happening to be in the atmosphere are destroyed and the air in the room rendered pure and healthful, as well as an even temperature of the room maintained.
By the admission of air through the regulator 19 in the door 18 oxygen is supplied to the combustion products passing over from the fuel inducing more perfect combustion thereof and producing an almost entirely smokeless stove.
I am aware that a downdraft in stoves is in common use and therefore do not claim the same broadly.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a stove having an outer and inner casing and a smoke-flue connected with the inner casing, a fuel-chamber in the inner cas ing and a heating-chamber therein under the fuel-chamber arranged to provide a downdraft into the fuel-chamber, a side draft out 'of the fuel chamber and a return draft chamber, a side draft out of the fuel-chamher and a return-draft through said heatingchamber to the smoke-fine; substantially as shown and described.
3. In a stove, the combination with a suitable base and top, and an outer casing provided with a draft-regulator at or near the bottom thereof, of an inner casing, a fuelchamber in said innercasing, aheating-chambcr therein under said fuel-chamber, and a smoke flue connected with said heatingchamber, said fuel chamber and heatingchamber having draft-openings arranged to provide a downdraft into said fuel-chamber, a side draft out of said chamber and a returndraft through said heating-chamber to the smoke-flue, and a series of tubes or pipes extending across said casing through said heating-chamber and upward between said outer and inner casings and communicating at each end with the outside atmosphere; substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a stove the combination with a suitable base and top,a removable cover on the top provided with a draft-regulator, and an outer casing provided with a draft-regulator at or near the bottom thereof,of an innercasinghaving draft-openings on one side thereof, a fireplate within said inner casing between said draft-openings, a smoke-flue connected with said inner casing below said fire-plate, and a series of tubes or pipes extending across said casings under said fire-plate, and upward between said outer and inner casings, and communicating through suitable openings in the top and outer casing with the outside atmosphere; substantially as and for the purposes set fort-l1.
