MICHEL G. FAGAN, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
` 'IMPROVEMENT IN FURNACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,059, dated March 21, 1876; application filed May 5, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHEL G. FAGAN, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revertible-Flue Furnaces; and do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, making a part of this specifxcation, in which- Figure liis a perspective view of my furnace with the casing removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same upon line w m of Fig. l, which` passes from front to rear, and Fig. 3 is a like view upon line y y of said Fig. l.
Letters of like name and Ikind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to increase the durability and improve the operation of a revertible-lue furnace; and it consists principally in a detachable fire-pot, connected with a furnace in such manner as to enable it to expand and contract vertically under the influence of heat, wit-hout interference with or change of the relative positions of other portions of said furnace, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified. It consists, further, in a revertible-ilue furnace having descending fiues which decrease in transverse dimensions from their upper to their lower ends, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown. It consists, further, in a revertible-ue furnace having ascending or return flues which pass through the combus tion-chamber, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth. It consists, further, in the combination of the crossflues with the dome-plate, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown and described.
'In the annexed drawings, A represents the base-plate of my furnace, upon which is an ash-pit, B, of usual form, and around the sides andv rear of said ash-pit is placed a bottom-flue, U, which is, preferably, formed upon a circular line.
Upon the ash-pit B is placed a irepot, D, and above .the latter a drum, E, which forms the combustion-chamber, and is supported by means of dues F F, &c., which extend between the lower side of the same, near its outer edge, and the bottom flue C.
The nues Fand F convey the heated gases of combustion from the combustionchamber to the bottom Hue, and have regularly-de` creasing dimensions from their upper to their lower ends, by which means the velocity of the current of said gases is rendered uniform, such decrease in the transverse area of said downward dues being equal to the lessened Avolume of said gases caused by the loss of heat as they recede from the incandescent fuel.
At a suitable poi-nt upon each side of the furnace, and, preferably, in rear of its center, is provided a return or ascending flue, G, which extends from the bottom flue 0 vertically upward through the combustion-chamber E and terminates at the upper side ofthe same within a crossue, H.
The ascending flue G is paralleland has transverse dimensions nearly equal to the combined areas of the lower ends of the descending flues F and F upon its side of the heater, so as to afford free upward passage for the heated gases, which, through said flues, reach the bottom flue (l.
By the passage of the ue G through the com bustion-chamber E, the-gases within such portion of said flue have their temperature increased and, by expansion, are caused to ascend with much greater velocity than would be the case were said pipes exposed to the chilling currents of air around the heater, such arrangement giving a strong and uniform draft.
The crossflue H is formed upon the upper side ofthe dome-plate E', and extends from the upper end of the return-flue G inward to the centerof said plate, where it unites with a like flue from the opposite side, and opens upward into an exit-fine, I, and downward through a dampered opening, E, into the combustionchamber E.
The location of the cross-dues H and H causes the gases passing through the same to retain their temperature, and prevents their velocity from becoming checked.
The fire-pot D rests upon the upper side of the ash-pit B, and has its lower end contained within, or caused to embrace, an upwardly-projecting flange, b, as may be desired. The upper end of said tire-pot fits within a corresponding opening in the lower side of the drum E, and has, preferably, an outwardlyprojecting ange, d, which extends beyond said opening and prevents the downward passage of dust and ashes.
As thus arranged, it will be seen that the vertical expansion and contraction of the firepot in no manner affect the relative positions ot' the contiguous portions of the furnace, such changes of' position of said parts being entirely independent.
I am aware of the patent of Gardner Chilson, No. 11,718, of September 26, 1854, in which are shown ascending flues that decrease in transverse dimensions'from their lower to their upper ends, and hereby disclaim such construction.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- 1. In a heatingfurnace, the combination, with' the ash-pit B, combustion-chamber E, and with the inclosed air-heating space between said parts, of the nre-pot D, which is supported by said ash-pit, and has its lower end contained within the vertical annular ange b and at its upper end projects through the lower plate of said combustion-chamber, and is provided with an outwardly-projecting ange, d, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
2. In combination with the combustionchamberE and with the bottom flue C, descending nes F and F, which extend between the same, and decrease in transverse dimensions from their upper to their lower ends, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
3. In combination with the combustionchamber E of a revertible-ue furnace, an ascending ne, G, which passes upward through said chamber, substantially as and for the pur pose set forth.
4. In combination with the combustionchamber E, return-lines G and G, and exit-Hue I, the cross-fines H and H formed upon the dome-plate E', and furnishing communication between said parts, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of April, 1875.
