To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, GUSTAV O. GonrHnL, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bath-Ghairs,'of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.

My invention has relation to improvements in bath-chairs.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction whereby the occupant of the chair is enabled to take either a steam bath or a hot-water bath as he may prefer, the means devised for effecting this result being of a most simple character and thoroughly efficient for the purpose.

With the above primary object in view, the invention consists of the devices and parts as hereinafter described and claimed or their equivalents.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation'ot'the device with portions broken away. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, a part being broken away; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of one-half of the chair,the hood or covering being removed.

Like numerals of reference denote like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the outer casing of the chair, the top of which is coveredby a suitable flexible hood 2, which may be drawn over the top of the chair, in order to completely cover the same, by means of a cord 3.

The numerals 4. 4 4. indicate buttons, which form a means for attachment of the hood.

The rear side of the chair-casing is extended inward at right angles to form a seat 5, the seat being supported at the angle by means of vertical legs or supports 6 6, extending up from the base of the chair. In the space heneath the seat is located a heat-generating device 7, which may be'of any preferred form and adapted for burning any desirable kind of fuel. It is provided withan ordinary form of draft-regulator 8, grate 9, and smoke-exit pipe 10. The heater is surrounded by a water jacket or space 11; also beneath the seat is located a supply-cylinder 12, which is held at a slight distance from the heater'by the aid of a connecting-lug 13. The cylinder is supplied with water through a suitable supply-pipe 14.

The numeral 15 indicates an intermediate partition which separates the heating compartment from the bath-section of the chair. A pipe 16 leads from the upper portion of the water jacket or space 11, and has com munication with the cylinder 12, and also communication at its extremity with a casing 17, said casing being arranged in front of the partition 16 and extending up and over the front portion of the seat. This casing is provided at opposite ends and at its bottom with a series of perforations 18. Extending down from the cylinder 12 is a pipe 19, said pipe terminating at its lower end in two

branches

20 and 21, respectively, the former connecting with water space or jacket 1]., surrounding the heater, and the latter projecting into the bath-section of the chair. Arranged upon the seat 5 is a series of transverse slats 22, preferably composed of wood or similar material, so as to enable the occupant of the chair to be seated without being uncomfortably af fected by the heat. A similar arrangement of slats 23 is provided at the bottom of the bath-section of the chair to atford a support for the feet of the occupant.

The numeral 24 indicates a water-discharging pipe or conduit, and 25 a dischargingfaucet, which enables the water to be withdrawn from the bath-section of the chair when the'water is allowed to attain a high level in said section for the purpose of a hotwater bath.

The numeral 26 indicates a threaded stopper or plug for the end of the branch pipe 21.

In utilizing myimproved chair for the purposes of a steam bath the end of the branch pipe 21 is closed by the stopper 26, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Water is then introduced through the supply-pipe 14; to the cylinder 12, and from said cylinder it is conducted through the pipes 19 and 20 to the water-space l1, surrounding the heater, finally bath-chamber soon becomes filled with steam, thereby making it possible for the occupant of the chair to take a most effective steam bath. The perforations in the casing 17 are arranged in the sides and ends of said casing, so that the steam will not issue from the casing directly onto the body of the person taking the bath.

When a hot-water bath is desired, the stopper or plug 26 is removed from the branch pipe 21. Water is then introduced into the bath-section of the chair, preferably through the top, and. in seeking its level fills up the Water-space around the heater and also the cylinder and. the several connecting-pipes. As the water becomes heated, it passes through the pipe 16 into the bath-section, and by this means a constant circulation of the water is kept up, the cold Water entering the branch pipe 21 from the bottom of the bath-section, and the hot water entering the bath-section through the pipe 16. After the chair has been used for a hot-water bath the water may be withdrawn through the discharging-faucet 25. A thermometer 27 may be conveniently arranged at the front of the chair-casing, so that the temperature may always be determined.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a bath chair, the combination, of a casing having an inwardly-extending portion constituting a seat, a bottom extension beneath said seat, and a vertical Wall or partition extending downwardly from the inner end of the seat to the bottom of the chair, of a heater supported by the bottom extension, said heater having a water jacket surrounding the same, a pipe for supplying water to the water jacket, and a pipe extending from the water jacket through the vertical wall or partition, and adapted to conduct the water from the Water jacket and discharge the same into the casing, substantially as set forth.

2. In a bath chair, the combination, With a casing having an inwardly-extending portion constituting a seat, a bottom extension beneath said seat, and a vertical wall or partition extending downwardly from the inner end of the seat to the bottom of the chair, of a heater supported by the bottom extension, said heater having a Water jacket surrounding the same, a cylinder supported beneath the seat, a pipe for supplying water to the cylinder, a pipe leading from the cylinder to the water jacket, and a pipe extending from the water jacket through the vertical wall or partition, substantially as set forth.

3. Ina bath chair, the combination, with a casing having an inwardly-extending portion constituting a seat,a bottom extension beneath said seat, and a vertical wall or partition extending downwardly from the inner end of the seat to the bottom of the chair, of a heater supported by the bottom extension, said heater having a water jacket surrounding the same, a pipe leading from the water jacket and extending through the vertical wall or partition, another pipe in com munication at one end with the first-named pipe, and having at its other end two branches, one leading to the casing, and the other to the water jacket, means for supplying water to the system of pipes, and a plug adapted for adjustment to and removal from the end of the branch pipe leading to the casing, substantially as set forth.

4. In a bath chair, the combination, of a casing having an inwardly turned portion constituting the seat of the chair, with a wall or partition extending down from the inner end of said seat, a casing for discharging into the inner space of the chair, said casing extending down from the seat portion to and in front of the wall or partition, and provided with perforated ends and bottom, and means for supplying hot water or steam to the perforated casing, substantially as set forth.
