Be it known that I, Louis PFINGST, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot-Water Boilers and Heaters, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in domestic hot-water boilers and heaters; and it-s object is to construct a hot-water boiler which can be used in conjunction with a range, as at present, and also can be used when the lire is out in the range as a hot-water boiler by the use of a suitable heater, or my improved hot-water boiler and heater may also be used without being connected to the water-front of the range.
My invention consists of certain novel features hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
1n the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a construction embodying my invention, the ligure represents aside elevation, partly in section, of my improved hot-water boiler and heater.
The following is a description of the construction Iof my hot-water boiler and heater: Vlt consists of a floor-stand or boiler-support combined with an inclosed shell heating-chamber and provided with a suitable burner located in and at the bottom of the heatingchamber. This chamber is provided' with suitable outlets for the passing olf of the products of combustion. The construction of the boiler is of the usual type with the exception that the interior is provided with circulating pipe or pipes that work in conjunction with the circulating' chamber or chambers. At the bottom of the boiler on its exterior and attached thereto is a water-reservoir which is termed the main circulating-chamber and provided with means whereby water from the boiler can enter and circulate therefrom. In addition to the main circulating chamber there is an auxiliary chamber, which encircles a portion of the main circulating-chamber. This is also provided with pipes to allow the water to enter and circulate therefrom. The main circulating-chamber is provided with an outlet to make connection with the waterfrontof the range.
The operation of the boiler is in the following manner: First, the cold-water supply enters through a pipe A into the chamber B, formed by the cylinder O, and passes from the chamber B through the pipe D into the main Water-circulating chamber E and through the pipe F to the water-front of the range, and the water being heated circulates through the pipe G back into the chamber B and passes from the outlet-pipe H to the various faucets in the house when the range is in operation.
As so far described my improved boiler and water-heater. can be connected with the range at all times; but when it is desired to obtain hot water at any time when there is no lire in the range the water can be heated by lighting the burner J, receiving' its supply of fuel through the pipe K. Located above said burner is the main water-circulating chamber E, which receives its supply through the pipe D from the chamber B and after being heated to the boiling-point rises through the neck L into the pipe M and is discharged at or near the top of the boiler through the pipe l/l, incased in an outer pipe N, thereby forming an air-chamber between the inner and outer pipes for the purpose of keeping the cold water in the boiler out of Contact with the inside circulating pipe. The outer pipe is held in place by a boiler-fitting D and a cap O, which is attached to the inner pipe M and the outer pipe N. Located above and encirclingI the main water-circulating chamber E is an auxiliary water-circulating chamber Q, the water passing from the chamber B through one or more pipes R into this auxiliary chamber, and after being heated the water rises into the chamber B through one or more pipes S at a point below the discharge of the circulatingpipe M, leading from the main water-circulating chamber. By arranging these two Water-circulating chambers in this manner there is produced a large area of heating-surface for a small amount of water, thereby utilizing the units of heat to the best advantage and providing independent discharges from the Watercirculating chambers into the boiler, thereby making it eiiicient. The products of combustion pass out through the opening' or openings U in the side of the shell T, forming the heating-chamber, which is supported by the floor-stand V. If desired, the two water-circulating chambers may be connected by suitable connections. W represents the usual air-vent pipe.
I do not limit myself to the arrangement and construction shown, as the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described the nature of my invention and set forth a construction embodying the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. In an apparatus of the character described, a boiler, a burner placed beneath said boiler, a main water circulating chamber placed between said'burner and said boiler and communicating' with said boiler, and an auxiliary water-circulating chamber interposed between said main water-circulating chamber and said boiler and communicating with said boiler.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, a boiler, a water-inlet pipe connected with said boiler, a burner placed beneath said boiler, a main water circulating chamber placed between said burner and said boiler and communicating with said boiler, a pipe connecting the upper part of said main watercirculating chamber with the upper part of said boiler, a pipe leading from the lower part of said main water-circulating chamber with the lower part of said boiler, an auxiliary water-circulating chamber interposed between said main water-circulating chamber and said boiler, a pipe connecting the lower part of said boiler with said auxiliary water-circulating chamber, and a pipe leading from said auxiliarywater-circulating chamber into said boiler.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, a boiler, a burner placed beneath said boiler, a main water circulating chamber placed between said burner and said boiler and provided with a throat communicating with said boiler, and an auxiliary water-circulating chamber surrounding said throat and interposed between said main circulating-chamber and said boiler and communicating with said boiler.
4. In an apparatus of the character described, a boiler, a water-inlet pipe connected with said boiler, a burner placed beneath said boiler, a main water circulating chamber placed between said burner and said boiler and provided with a throat communicating with said boiler, a pipe connecting the upper part of said throat with the upper part of said boiler, a pipe leading from the lower part of said boiler through A.said throat to the lower part of said main circulating-chamber, an auxiliary water-circulating chamber surrounding said throat and interposed between said main circulating-chamber and said boiler, a pipe connecting the lower part of said boiler with said auxiliary circulating-chamber, and a pipe leading from said auxiliary circulating-chamber into said boiler to a point somewhat above the bottom of said boiler.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, a boiler, a water-inlet pipe leading to theV lower part of said boiler, means for heating said boiler, a water-circulating chamber located between said heating means and said boiler, a pipe located within said boiler and connecting the upper part of said circulatingchamber with the upper part of said boiler, a pipe connecting the lower part of said boiler with the lower part of said circulating-chamber, the water-frontof a range, va pipe leading from said water-front to said boiler, and a pipe leading from said circulating-chamber to said water-front.
6. In an apparatus of the character described, a boiler, a water-inlet pipe leading to the lower part of said boiler, means for heating said boiler, a water-circulating chamber located between said heating means and said boiler and provided with a throat communieating with said boiler, a pipe located within said boiler and connecting the upper part of said throat with the upper part of said boiler, a pipe leading from the lower part of said boiler through said throat to the lower part of said circulating-chamber, the water-front of a rang'e, a pipe leading from said waterfront to said boiler, and a pipe leading from said circulating-chamber to said water-front.
