To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J ULIUS L. TORNEY, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book Holding and Carrying Devices, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has relation to improvements in book holding and carrying devices.

The device is of particular utility where it is desired to remove from a receptacle and carry a plurality of books atone time, as is frequently the case in school-rooms where it is customary for a certain number of books to be distributed to different scholars.

It is therefore the primary object of my invention to provide an improved construction of book-holder capable of accommodating a desired number of books, and also capable of being conveniently carried from one'point to another and the books distributed therefrom.

A further object of the invention resides in the combination, with said holder, of a case, within which the holder fits.

With the above objects in View the invenvention consists of the devices and parts, or their equivalents, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the outer case, within which the book-holders fit. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the case with the cover thereof thrown down, disclosing the book-holders in position therein, one of said holders being arranged with its back piece outermost and the other holder in a reverse position. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the right-hand side of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the book-holders, and Fig. 5 is a bottom view thereof.

In the accompanying drawings the numeral 6 indicates the outer case, which is advisably of rectangular form with an open front side. This opening is regulated by means of a hinged cover 7, the hinged connection being arranged preferably, although not necessarily, at the lower edge of the cover. The opposite edge of the cover is provided with a hook 8, which is adapted to engage a staple 9, and thereby hold the cover in closed position.

It is obvious that any other form of fastening or catch may be used, as, for instance, a lock and key, where security against theft is desired. The top of the case is provided with a suitable handle 10, by which said case and its contents can be conveniently carried. The outer side of the hinged cover is advisably provided with arms 11 11 for supporting a name card or plate 12, which card or plate may be employed to advantage where my invention is used in school-rooms.

The book-holding devices are preferably of right-angular form, that is, each consists of a horizontal bottom piece 13 and a vertical back piece 14. These parts are connected by means of the oblique brace-arms 15 15. The front edge of the horizontal bottom piece of each book-holder is provided with handles 16 16, preferably of flexible leather or similar material, and the back piece is also provided witlrhandles 17 17, advisably rings secured to staples 18 18..

Upon the under side of each holder are arranged rails 19 19, which are adapted to fit and slide in corresponding grooves 20 in the bottom of the case. Each book-holder is also provided upon its under side, near opposite ends, with recesses 21 21, which provide convenient finger-grasps in carrying the device.

The oblique brace-arms act not only to prevent end displacement of the books, but may furthermore serve as handles when the recesses 21 are not used as finger-grasps. The oblique arms are also advantageously employed over solid end pieces for the reason that not only can the books be much more readily removed, but at the same time a considerable saving in material is thereby effected.

Fig. 2 shows that the book-holding devices to the horizontal bottom piece of the holder, it is obvious that, if preferred, said rails may be run longitudinally of said bottom piece and the grooves in the bottom of the case run in a similar direction. In this event the holders will be passed into the case endwise.

As already stated, the book-holders herein shown and described will be found of particular utility in school-rooms where the distribution of certain books is required. They will furthermore be useful in libraries for carrying books from the shelves to the point or points of distribution. The invention also provides a convenient means for professional men in carrying their books from the office for use in court, and in cases where the books are to be used in court located at a distant point the entire, device provides a convenient method of shipment.

It will be noted that the outer case serves the twofold function of a book holding and carrying device and that the inner holders likewise serve an analogous function.

While I have herein shown two of the book-holders, yet I do not wish to be understood as thereby restricting myself to that particular number, as, if preferred, only one holder may be used, or more than two, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with an outer case having an opening and a cover for said opening, the bottom piece of said case provided with grooves, of one or more holders adapted to fit within the case, each holder consisting of a bottom piece, a back piece, and at opposite ends oblique connecting brace-arms, said bottom piece provided on its under side with rails fitting the grooves of the bottom piece of the case, and also provided at its front edge with a handle or handles, and the back piece provided with a handle or handles, whereby a holder can be readily removed from the case whether placed therein with its back piece innermost'or outermost.
