Description

(No Model.) I I G. S. BEITH.- PIPE PLATE.
No. 570.368. Patented 0012.27, 1896. I
. NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. BEITH, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
PIPE-PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,368, dated October 27, 1896.
Application filed July 25, 1896.
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. BEITH, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of l the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Plates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for covering or closing holes in pipes, and has special reference to the means employed for clamping the cap-plate or cover on the body of the pipe.
It is a common practice of plumbers and others, when the ordinary methods for clearing a pipe fail, to break a hole or holes in the pipe in order to ascertain the location of the obstruction and to assist in removing the cause thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and effective means for clamping a cap-plate over the holes, so that the plate can be quickly applied and as readily removed in case further access to the interior of the pipe should be found necessary.
I accomplish the object sought by provid- V ing a cap-plate fitting the pipe to be covered,
a clamp whose peculiar construction admits of its easy insertion through the hole in the pipe, and means for clamping the cap-plate to the pipe, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of a portion of a pipe, showing ahole through the top thereof. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cap-plate clamped on the pipe. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the cap-plate. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the pipe and cap-plate, drawn on line 00 0c of Fig. 2, showing the clamping device in position thereon. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the clamp and clamping-bolt. Fig. 6 is a side view of a modified form of clamp. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the clamp shown in Fig. 6. Fig. Sis a plan view of clamp shown in 5. Fig 9 is a side elevation of the clamp and clamping-bolt in their normal position, showing the clamp in the position for insertion through the hole in the pipe. Fig. 10 is a perspective View of a modified form of clamp.
In the drawings and specification like letters indicate like parts.
Serial No. 600,478. on model.)
A is the pipe. (Shown in Fig. 1 witha portion of its upper wall broken away.)
13 is the cap-plate or cover, which saddles the pipe and covers the hole therein. It is preferably made with a central dome B, said dome having a central aperture through which the clamping-bolt D passes.
C is the clamp. (Best shown in Figs. 5 and 10.) It may be made to fit the shape or curve of the pipe for transverse or other application or straight, so as to be used on any size of pipe. It is slightly raised to one side of its center of gravity the raised portion of the clamp being preferably arched or curved, with a longitudinal slot through such raised portion, forming a seat on its under side for the head E of the clamping-bolt D. The bolt-head should conform to the seat and the end of the slot be so beveled as to allow the clamp to assume the position shown in Fig. 9, thus facilitating its entrance through the hole in the pipe.
After the insertion of the clamp it is moved slightly to one side until its upper or lighter end is brought into contact with the inner surface of the pipe. The clamping-bolt is then passed through the aperture in the capplate, a washer G and lock-nut F are placed over the threaded bolt, and when the nut is screwed home the cap-plate is firmly clamped to the pipe, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4:.
To make a gas 'or water tight connection, white lead or cement or any other suitable material may be placed between the cap-plate and pipe.
The shank of the clamping-bolt next its head should be squared, so as to prevent the displacement of the clamp, and also to prevent the turning of the bolt when the nut is screwed thereon.
\Vhile I have shown a clamp operated by a free bolt passing through and held in a slot in said clamp it is evident that other forms for attaching the bolt to the clamp may be used Without departing from the vital features of my invention.
\Vhat I claim as new and of my own invention, for which I ask Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A pipe-cover, for covering holes in pipes, consisting of a metallic plate fitting over the pipe, a clamp having a threaded bolt attached thereto beyond the lineof the center ofgravity of said clamp, said bolt passing through an aperture in said metallic plate, and anut engaging with said bolt, whereby the cap-plate is clamped to the pipe, substantially as set forth and described.
2. In a pipe-cover, the combination of a cap-plate having a central dome thereon, a clamp having a slot longitudinally formed on one side of the center of gravity of said clan p a threaded bolt passing through the slot in said clamp and through an aperture in the cap-plate dome, and a nut engagingwithsaid bolt for clamping the cap-plate on the pipe, substantially asset forthand described.
3. In a pipe-cover, the combination of a cap-plate with central dome thereon, and a central aperture in said dome, a clamp sup, ported by a threaded bolt to one side of the center of gravity of said clamp, said-bolt passing-through the slot in said clamp and through the aperture in the cap-plate dome, and a nut for engagement Witlrsaid clamping-bolt, sub,-
4-. In a pipe-cover, the combination of a cap-plate-With central dome thereon, a clamp having a longitudinal slot therein, said slotted portion raised or arched above the surface plane of said clamp, a threaded bolt passing through said slot and through the cap-plate, and a nut engaging said bolt, substantially as set forth and described.
5. In a pipe-cover, the combination of capplate 13, having central dome B, clamp 0, having slotted arch O, threaded bolt D, with head E, thereon, said bolt passing through said slotted clamp and held therein by the bolt-head, and through the cap-plate dome, and nut F, engaging with said bolt, substantially as set forth and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as inyinvention I have signed my name,.in presence of two witnesses, this 22d day of July, 1896'.
GEO; S; BEITI-I.

stantially asset forth and described.
