Description

" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL H. LUNT, OF ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA.
COCK OR FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,609, dated February 19, 1895.
Application filed October 6 1894. Serial No. 525,120. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern.-
Beit known that I, SAMUEL H. LUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Alexandria Vand State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cocks or Faucets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in stop cocks or faucets, which may be used in connection with water or gas street boxes, or for other purposes as may be required.
The object of my invention is to provide a suitable means, whereby a direct and quick communication may be had with the plug of the cock, or faucet by means of its key, thus obviating the trouble as is now the case with the Tshaped headed plugs, as for instance,
for any reason the water is to be shut olf from a building some considerable time is required in making connection between the turn key and T-head of the faucet, whereby buildings are sometimes flooded and considerable property is damaged. By my invention such defects are readily remedied by the simplicity of construction of the plug of the cock, and the ease and facility with which it may be operated in turning or cutting off the water from a building.
The invention therefore consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter describedand set `forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the turn key.
Referring to the drawings the letter A, designates a casing with opposite branches a, a. Mounted and rotating in the casing is a plug B, secured by a nut b. This plug is provided With a rectangular upper portion C, having an extension c, made in pyramidal or pointed form, so as to enable the key to be readily fitted t-o the rectangular portion of the plug in order to manipulate the same.V
The letter D, represents a funnel shape cup or key guide, which surrounds the upper end of the plug below the rectangular portion thereof. This cup is perforated or provided with a series of holes d, which is designed to keep the cup clear of foreign substances, or, if such substances should remain in the cup, they will be readily forced through the holes therein when the key is connected with the rectangular portion of the plug. The cup also serves in guiding the key to the plug as will be readily seen.
In Fig. 3, of the drawings E, denotes the turn key, the socket e, of which is made rectangular interiorly to fit the rectangular portion of the plug, so that there will be no unnecessary delay in applying the key to turn the water either on, or from the building.
I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction shown in my drawings, and heretofore particularly described in my specification, but I reserve to myself the right to vary the same, and. make such alterations and changes therein, without departing from the essential features 0f my invention, or the true spirit and scope thereof.
.I attach importance to the fact that my improved plug with perforated cup can be attached to cocks or faucets nowv in use.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cock or faucet the combination with the casing, of a plug mounted therein and having a pyramidal upper end, and a perforated frustum shaped cup surrounding said upper end and secured to the plug, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. A plug for faucets having a pyramidal upper end and a surrounding cup secured to the plug, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I` affix my signaturey in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL I-I. LUNT.
Witnesses:
GEO. C. PoULroN, K. KEMPEE.
