CLEAN OUT FERRULE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.28, I916.
Patented Dec. 12,1916.
Wilmeooco JOHN H. MORRISON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLEAN-OUT FERBULE.
Application filed March 28, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. MORRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clean-Out Ferrules, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clean out ferrules adapted to be used in plumbing systems and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a ferrule of the character stated which includes a plug of special design which may be easily and readily removed from the ferrule when desired and which may also be readily replaced therein notwithstanding the fact that the ferrule may be located at a point in the plumbing system where space is limited.
With the above object in view the device includes a ferrule adapted to be applied to the drain or waste pipe of a plumbing systom, the said ferrule being provided at its inner sides with a screw thread located at the intermediate portion of the said ferrule. A dome shaped plug is externally threaded at its larger end and the said threads are adapted to loosely engage the threads of the ferrule. A packing of oakum or similar fibrous material may be inserted between the plug and the inner surface of the ferrule above the threads and a circular wire with an upstanding end is positioned upon the said oalrum. Molten lead is then poured into the space between the plug and the ferrule above the wire whereby the wire is embedded in the same but the said wire may be removed carrying the lead with it by applying a tool to its upstanding end after the plug has been moved in a downward direction in the ferrule.
In the accompanying drawing :The figure is a transverse sectional view of the clean out ferrule.
The structure includes a ferrule 1 adapted to be applied to the side of a drain or waste pipe of a plumbing system at the trap thereof or at any other suitable point. The said ferrule 1 is provided at its interior and between its ends with. a screw thread 2, there being provided a shoulder 3 at the upper end of the said thread. The ferrule 1 is preferably made of cast iron although it may be formed from other suitable material. A conical dome shaped plug 4 is pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

vided at its larger end with a thread 5 which loosely engages the thread 2 in the ferrule 1 whereby the said plug 4 may be readily screwed into engagement with the ferrule by the use of the hand only. The plug 4 is provided at its exterior and at the upper end of the thread 5 with an outstanding shoulder 6 which may assume approximately the same level as the shoulder 3 when the plug 4 is in engagement with the ferrule 1. The exterior conical surface 7 of the plug 4 is spaced from the inner surface of the upper portion of the ferrule 1 when the said plug is in engagement with the ferrule as shown in the figure of the drawing. The plug 4 is provided at its upper end with a squared or any other polygonal projection 8. The said projection 8 is provided with an opening 9 which passes transversely through the same.
When the plug 4 is in engagement with the ferrule 1, oakum 10 or any other suitable fibrous packing material is interposed between the conical surface 7 and the inner surface of the ferrule 1 and above the shoulders 3 and 6 as shown in the drawing. A circular wire 11 is then laid upon the said oakum 10 and the wire is provided with an upstanding end 12 which projects beyond the upper end of the ferrule 1 and which is provided at its upper extremity with an eye 13. Molten lead 14 is then poured into the upper portion of the space between the conical surface 7 of the plug 4 and the inner surface of the ferrule 1 whereby the said wire 11 is embedded in the said lead. Thus the joint between the threads of the plug 4 and the ferrule 1 is effectually closed and sealed and the escape of gas or moisture at the clean out ferrule is avoided.
When it is desired to remove the plug 4 from the ferrule 1 the said plug 4 is tapped from its sides a sufficient number of times to cause the filling to become loose, then, a bar is passed through the opening 9 in the projection 8 and by tapping the same at the opposite end thereof the plug 4 is screwed in a downward direction in the ferrule 1 whereby the conical surface 7 of the said plug disengages the inner side of the lead filling 14. By applying a suitable tool to the upper end of the eye 13 of the wire 11 the ring of lead 14 may be removed from the ferrule 1 and then the oakum 10 may be removed from between the lower portion of the conical surface 7 and the inner surface of the ferrule 1; After this has been done the plug 4; is free and maybe readily unscrewed from the thread 2 by using the hand inasmuch as the threads 2 andcal surface 7 and the inner wall of the ferrule land the ring of lead 14: which has previously been removed from the said ring is reinserted in the upper portion of the space between the conical surface 7 and the inner surface of the ferrul'e l and may be secured therein calkingv with the toolsusually employed for this purpose.
. From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying draw 7 ing'it will be seen that a clean out ferrule of simple anddurable structure is provided andthat the plug'thereof may be easily and quickly' removed from the fe'rru'le and r'einserted; the" same. Also it will be observed that when the plug is in position the ferrule and the oakum and metallic packing are applied that Y the joint between thejplug and the ferrule is effectually closed' and will prevent the escape of moisture or gas.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 11' ferrule havin'g an interiorly located thread between its ends, a coneshaped plug having a thread adapted to engage the thread of the ferrule, the conical exterior surface of the'p'lug being spaced from the inner-"surface of the ferrule as appliedand a packing interposed between the conical exterior surface of the plugand the inner surface of'the' ferrule.
2. A ferrule having an interiorly located threadpositioned between its ends, a cone shaped plug having an exterior thread adapted to engage the thread in the ferrule, fibrous packing interposed between the exterior conical surface of the plug and the inner surface of the ferrule and a metallic packing poured into the upper portion of the said space above the fibrous packing. v
x 3. A ferrule provided with an interiorly lbcated' thread positioned between the ends thereof, a conical plug having an ext'eriorly located thread adapted to engage the thread in the ferrule, a fibrous packing interposed between the conical exterior surface of the plug and the interior surface of the ferrule, a curved wire positioned upon the said fibrous packing and having an end portion disposed above the upper end of tl'ie-ferrule and a metallic packinglocated in the upper portion of the said space between the plug and the ferrule and in which the said wire is embedded;
a. A" ferrule having an interiorly located thread positioned between the ends thereof, a conical plhg having an' exteriorly located thread which loosely engages the thread inthe ferrule, a fibrous packing interposcd'between the exterior conical surface of the plng'and the interior surface of the ferrule and positioned abovethe upper ends of the said threads, a curved wire resting upon the fibrous packing and ha'ving'an end portion which extends above the end of the ferrule, anda metallic" packing fitting snugly in the upper portion of the s id space and in which" the said wire is einbedded.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
