SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,096, dated October 2'7, 1896.

To all whom, t may concern:

Be it known that we, HIRAMA. I-IICOK and MARY M. I-IICOK, citizens ofthe United States, residing at Viroqua, in the county of Vern on and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jugs, Jars, or Bottles, and Stoppers for the Same; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to improvements in fruit-jars, bottles, and similar vessels, and to Stoppers for the same and means for holding the Stoppers in place; and its object is to pro-` vide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in use.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a jar constructed in accordance with our invention, the stopper being removed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, the stopper being in place and held by means of the clamp. Fig. 3 is aperspective view of the clamp detached. FigA: is a similar view of the stopper.

In the said drawings the reference-numeral l designates the jar, 2 the neck, and the head. This head is rectangular in form and its sides extend outward beyond the neck. On opposite sides the head is formed with an inclined exterior rabbet 4. The said head is also formed with an annular iiange 5, forming a seat for the corresponding iiange G of a stopper 7. This stopper is formed with rectangular top S, corresponding in shape and size with the said head.

The numeral 9 designates a bail, preferably made of malleable cast-iron, having the sides turned down at right angles and the lower edges inclined and turned inwardly at right angles, forming inclined flanges l0. A rubber gasket 12, preferably square, is interposed between the flange of the stopper and the` flange of the head of the jar.

The neck of the jar, above thelange, should gaged with the inclined rabbets in the head,

and the bail is then forced inward over the top of the stopper, the edges of said wedges acting as wedges to clamp the bail firmly on top of the stopper and holding the latter securely in place, and by means of the rubber gasket hermetically closing the jar.

A jar and stopper and means for holding the latter in place, as above described, will be found very efficient in use.

The invention can be economically manufactured and the jar will be hermetically closed, thereby preserving the contents thereof for an indefinite time.-

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim is The conibination with a jar or similar vessel, the neck of which in its inner side is formed with a circular recess with a rounded or curved shoulder, and said neck formed with a rectangular head the sides of which project beyond the neck and formed with inclined rabbets, of the cylindrical stopper reduced at its inner end and formed with ak curved or rounded peripheral shoulder and having a rectangular top and the bail consisting of the `metal plate having two of its opposite sides -bent downwardly and inwardly forming an inclined flange, and the circular washer, substantially as described.
