IIALFDAN SOMMERFELDT, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
DRAFTSMANS MEASURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,358, dated October 13, 1896.
Application filed December 2, 1895. Serial No. 570,805. (No model.)
To (6 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HALFDAN SOMMER- FELDT, a native of Norway, residing in Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draftsm ens Measures, of which the following is a full and clear specification.
My invention has relation to measuring instruments, and my object is to provide a device of this character which will be cheap to manufacture and light and durable in use.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification Figures 1, 2, and 3 show the various members of the scale unassembled. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the scale. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the scale, showing the parts assembled.
Referring to the drawings, 1 2, and 3 indicate leaves of the scale, each leaf being provided at its side with one or more eyes 5 5 for the reception of a pintle 6, designed to hold the leaves together. It will be noted that the leaves 3 and 4 are integral and are bent at an angle, that portion of the metal where they are bent serving to form the channel or eye 7 through which the pintle 6 passes. If disposed, I may do away with this form and make each of the leaves of the hinge separate and distinct and provided with the eyes for the passage of the pintle without departing in the least from the spirit of my invention.
The various leaves of the measure are provided with difierently-graduated scales.
As is obvious, any number of leaves may be secured together by the pintle 6, and any series of graduated scales desired may be indicated thereon.
When it is desired to use any particular scale, the same is first turned to and is immediately ready for use, the remaining leaves serving to assist in holding the scale in use in position and also facilitating the handling of the measuring instrument.
In the event of any of the leaves of the scale becoming worn or disfigured in any manner anew one can readily be supplied, as is apparent, while it is obvious that any light material, such, for instance, as aluminium, maybe advantageously used for the various leaves, thereby making the device light to handle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. A scale comprising a series of graduated leaves bent to form a hinge a movable series of leaves provided with eyes and adapted to be secured to the fixed leaves by means of a pintle passing through said eyes and hinge.
2. A scale comprising a fixed series of graduated leaves, bent to form a hinge and to be secured to a movable series of leaves by a pintle.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
HALFDAN SOMHERFELDT.
