SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,901, dated October 6, 1896.

To all whom it man concern:

Be it kn own that I, GARRETT LAYTON GRIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milford, in the county of Kent, State of Delaware, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Coat-Hangers, which improiement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a coat-hanger which is adapted to be folded in small compass to be capable of being placed in a traveling bag, satchel, &c., and when required for use to be extended in and to enter the sleeves of a coat for properly sustaining the latter, the hangers being formed of sliding frames and a connected strap, which fold and unfold together by common movements, said hangers being composed of parts hereinafter set forth.

Figure 1 represents a top or plan View of a coat-hanger in folded position embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 represents a top or plan View thereof, the hanger being in extended condition. Fig. 4 represents a side elevation thereof. Fig. 5 represents a top view of a portion, showing a cross-bar to which one of the ends of the hanging strap is attached.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a coat-hanger which consists of the wire frames B and C and the hanging strap D, of leather or other suitable material. The frame B consists of the side members E E and the crossbar G, the inner ends of said side members being formed with the eyes F E, which are at the ends of the cross-bar. The frame Ois similar in construction, being composed of side members E E, eyes F F, and a crossbar G, the side pieces of one frame freely passing through the eyes of the other frame, thus connecting the two frames and permitting them to slide on each other while being guided in their motions by said eyes, it being noticed that the frames are somewhat elastic, so that when the hanger is in extended condition the arms are expanded so as to present broad surfaces from which the coat may nicely hang stretched out at the top of the shoulders. The ends of the strap also approach, whereby it is converted into a loop which may be fitted on a hook, nail, &c., for centrally suspending the device. When the frames are moved in, the ends of the strap follow the separating cross-bar, and thus flattens out the strap andcauses it to occupy a'position within the frames, as shown in Fig. l.

The outer ends of the frames are bent or turned back, forming-guards and rings or eyes H, which widen said ends and avoid the exposure of the edges of the wire of which said frames are formed, although I do not limit myself to such material or to the form shown.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A coat-hanger consisting of two frames, each composed of a single piece of material, bent so as to form side members with diverging outer ends, and with a cross-bar at its inner end with eyes through which the side members of the other frame arefreely received, and means connecting the opposite cross-bars of the sections for suspending the hanger said parts being combined substantially as described.

2. A coat-hanger consisting of two sections, each section being composed of side pieces, having eyes at their inner ends, with connecting cross-bars, the side pieces of each section freely passing through the eyes of the other section, and a strap attached at its ends to said cross-bars, said parts being combined substantially as described.

3. A coat-hanger, consisting of two frames, each composed of a single piece of material bent so as to form side members, a cross-bar and eyes, through which latter the side members of the other frame are freely received, and a strapattached at its ends to the crossbars, said side members diverging from their centers and having their outer ends turned,
