ADJUSTABLE PICTURE OR MIRROR FRAME HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,826, dated October 6, 1896. Application filed September 12, 1895. Serial No. 562,312. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that we, SAMUEL L. YOUNG and JAMES A. NORRIS, citizens of the United States, residing at East Liverpool, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Picture or Mirror Frame Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in picture and mirror frame holders; and the object in view is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient attachment of the character referred to, in which provision is made for adjusting the angle of the frame with relation to the wall or partition upon which it is hung without the necessity of removing the said frame therefrom.

The invention also contemplates means for adjusting the attachment with a view to adapting it to frames ofvarying sizes.

In order to accomplish the objects referred to, the invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts whereby advantages in point of simplicity and adaptability are attained, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and finally pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view looking toward the rear of a picture-frame, showingthe improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the attachment detached.

Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a frame of any, description to which it is desired to apply the improved holder. In order to adapt the frame to receive the improved attachment, a centrallylocated screw-eye or staple or equivalent securing device 2 is inserted in the upper bar of said frame, and a pair of similar eyes or sta-. ples 3 is inserted in the lower bar of the frame at points equidistant from the center thereof.

The attachment comprises a strap 4 of metal or any suitable material provided with a longitudinal series of perforations or eyelets and adapted to slide within a metal hanger 5. This metal hanger is provided at its upper end with a perforation 6, by means of which 'tuting a friction-joint.

it may be hung upon a nail or projection of the wall or partition, and the opposite side edges of the blank from which said hanger is formed are overturned or recurved and bent inward, as shown at 7, to form guidingflanges, which confine the strap at and allow the same to slide longitudinally of the hanger for the purpose of adjusting the device to frames of different sizes. The lower end of the strap at is formed with a roll or coil 8, which receives a wire 9,the terminals of which are hooked and passed through the screweyes or staples 3 at the bottom of the frame, thus securing said strap pivot-ally to the frame. The perforated strap 4 and the hanger in which it slides are held at the desired relative adjustment by means of a spring-catch 10, which is attached to and carried by the said hanger and arranged in such manner that its lower hooked end may be engaged with the proper perforation in the strap 4.

11 designates a pair of. parallel arms which are hingedly connected at their rear ends with the hanger 5, adjacent to itsupper end, said arms receiving between their opposite ends the rear end of an arm 12, which eX- tends forward and connects pivotally with the upper bar of the frame by means of a sheet-metal or malleable strap 13, secured to said arm 12 and having its terminal hooked to pass through and be clenched around the screw-eye or staple 2, above referred to. The arms 11 and 12 are approximately of the same length, and by reason of their particular arrangement the arm 12 is adapted to fold within and between the arms 11 for varying the distance between the upper end of the hanger 5 and the top of the frame 1. Provision is thus made for adjusting the angle of the frame with relation to the wall, and in order to hold the parts to their adjusted angle the inner adjacent ends of the arms 11 and 12 are pivotally connected by means of a through bolt or spindle 14, upon which is placed a winged or thumb nut 15, by means of which the ends of said arms may be pressed together with any desired force, thus consti- Friction-washers 16 are inserted between the adjacent faces of the arms 11 and 12, and also within the head of the bolt and inside of the thumb-nut 15,

for assisting in affording the necessary frietional adhesion between the ends of said arms.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple, inexpensive, and convenient attachment for picture or mirror frames is obtained, in which provision is made for adjusting the angle of the frame with relation to the wall or other vertical support, and such adjustment may be accomplished with facility Without removing the frame from the wall. By reason of the frictional connection between the arms 11 and 12 the frame will be retained in its adjusted position without the interposition of other means, and by reason of the relative arrangement of the hanger and the longitudinallyperforated strap sliding therein the device is adapted for use in connection with frames of various sizes.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is

1. In a frame holder or support, a hanger made extensible longitudinally and comprising two sections, one section being adapted to telescope within the other section and one of said sections carrying a spring catch adapted to cooperate with engaging surfaces on the other section for holding the sections relatively fixed, and provision for connecting the end of one of the sections to the frame, in combination with a jointed and folding connection attached to the other section of the hanger and having provision whereby it maybe engaged with the frame, substantially as described.

2. The herein-described frame-holder,comprising a vertical hanger-bar, a perforated strap adjustable longitudinally of said hanger, a catch carried by said hanger and engaging with the perforations in the strap, and the pivoted and folding arms attached to said hanger, the device as a whole being adapted to be applied to a frame and to be adjusted to suit the size of said frame, substantially as specified.
