Be it known that I, ANANIAS SWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Timberville, in the county of Rockingham and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Label-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to label-holders, and has for its object to provide an improved holder of the character described combining great efficiency and ease of manipulation with simplicity and durability and capable of'being manufactured at small cost.

To these ends my invention consists in the novel features and in the construction, combination, or arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims following the description, reference being had tothe accompanyingdrawin gs, forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan view of one of my improved label-holders. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are similar views of modified forms of holders. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the holdershown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a crosssectional view of the holder shown in Fig. 4.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the base of my improved holder, which is shown in the drawings as consisting of a substantially rectangular plate of sheet metal, but which in practice may be made of any desired shape and of any preferred material. Arranged transversely of the plate l are a plurality of guard-wires 2, which are attached at their opposite ends to the edges of theplate l, and between their ends are raised slightly above the face of the plate to permit a card, tag, or similar label being slipped freely thereunder.

The ends of the guard-wires may be attached to the plates in anysuitable manner; but my preferred method of attaching the same is by forming two perforations in the plate for each guard-wire, as at 3, and bending or striking up from the under side of the plate semicylindrical arches 4., extending from each of said perforations to the adjacent edge of the plate. Said arches form sockets in which the ends of the guard-wires are inserted and in which they may be immovably secured by solder.

A spring-clip 5 is attached to one end of the plate land comprises a bail-shaped wire 6, about which is coiled a resilient wire, as at 7, the bail 6 being attached to the plate in manner similar to the guard-wires 2. The ends of the wire coil 7 project laterally in opposite directions, one end, as 8, being attached to the plate in the same manner as the ends of the bail and guard-wires, and the other or free end, 9, being bent inward toward the plate to form a bent finger 10, adapted to rest on the article to be held.

As shown in Fig. 1, the finger 10 does not quite extend to the'adjacent guard-wire 2, while in Fig. 2 theend 9 of the spring-clip extends over and across said guard-Wire. The plate 1 is provided with means for attaching the same to the articles to which it is designed to be applied, and this may most conveniently be accomplished by providing said plate with a series of perforations 1l, adapted for the reception of screws, nails, bolts, rivets, or similar fastenings, or for the reception of a wire or wires for fastening the plate to a poultry-coop or the like.

In operation the finger l0 of the spring-clip is raised and the card, tag, or label slipped under the guard-wires and the finger then released and permitted to grasp the card or article placed thereunder. It will be seen that the guard-wires hold the label symmetrically on the plate, and also hold it spread flat thereon, while the finger l0 of the springclip holds the label, without penetrating or otherwise injuring it, from displacement or accidental removal from under the guardwires. By bending the arm of the wire toward the plate to form the finger l() said arm is raised up above the plate, and by this means is formed a convenient means for grasping said arm to raise the finger for the insertion and removal of the label. It will be apparent that the label may be removed from the holder with the same ease and rapidity with which' it was inserted.

In practice the plates will be made of any desired size or shape and will be provided with any number of guard-'wires best suited for the purpose for which the holders are designed. If desired,also,more than one springclip may be provided for each holder, and such clips may be of any suitable size and strength.

rl`he holders above described may be employed for holding cards, tags, tickets, labels, and equivalent articles of all kinds, and may be applied to crates, coops, cases, boxes, barrels, freight-cars, and shipping vessels of any character whatsoever.

In Fig. 3 I have shown a slightly-modilied form of holder designed to be made larger than the holders above described and more particularly designed for holding and displaying hand-bills, posters, public notices, and similar advertisements. As shown in said figure, the guard-wires 2 are arranged longitudinally of the plate l, and said plate is provided at its upper edge l2 with any convenient means forsuspendin g the device upon a wall, door, or the like. A spring-clip 5 (one or more) is attached to the plate l and is constructed in all respects similar to that before described, excepting that the arm 0 of the springwclip is preferably attached to the guard-wire 2, which it crosses, by solder or other suitable means. By thus attaching the spring-clip and the guard-wire the latter also serves as a clip to aid in grasping and holding the bills, the., to the plaie against removal, said guard-wire being raised and lowered by the arm 9" of said clip. The arm il, however, may be unattached to the guard wire in manner similar to that shown in Figs. l and 2, while on the other hand the arm 9 (shown in Fig. 2) may be attached to the guardwire 2, which it crosses, in manner similar to arm 9*. To the upper portion of the plate l are attached one or more spring-clips 5, each of said clips consisting of a fixed and a movable jaw numbered l-j and 1l, respectively, said jaws being U-shaped in cross-section and pivotally connected together by a cross-pin l5, about which is coiled a spring lo'. The spring is bent atits center to form a loop 17, that bears against the upper end of one of said jaws, and the ends 18 thereof bear against the corresponding end of the other jaw. The movablejaw l-l, near its grasping end lf), may be connected to the guard-wil 2l in manner similar to the arm 9, (shown in Fig. or it may be unattached thereto in manner similar to the arm 9. (Shown in Fig. 2.) The iixed jaw 13 of the spring-clip 5h maybe attached to the plate l in any suitable manner, but may be conveniently attached thereto by forming slots 2d in said plate and laying a strap ill in the fixed j aw 13, the projecting ends of which are inserted in said slots and then bent back against the rear side of the plate, to which, if desired, `they may be attached by solder or equivalent wellknown means. It will be manifest that the holder last described may be provided with a plurality of guard-wires 2" in manner similar to that heretofore described.

I wish it to be understood that by the term label-holder I mean to indicate a holder adapted to hold indicating or designating articles of every kind whatsoever.

Ilaving described my invention, what I claim is l. The combination with a plate, of a guardwire 2 iixed at its opposite ends to said plate and operatin g to embrace a label inserted between said guard-wirc and plate, and a springclip 5, comprising a bail G attached to the plate and a coiled spring 7 coiled about said bail and having arms 8 and 9 projecting lat erally in opposite directions, the arm 8 heilig attached to the plate and the arm D having a bent linger l() operating to grasp and hold the label against lateral movement beneath the guard-wire, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a plate l perforated as at 3 and having arches 4 struck up from its rear side and extending to said perfera-tions, a guard-wire extending across the face of said plate and havingits ends inserted beneath said arches, and a spring-clip attached to said plate and operating to grasp and hold a label inserted between the guardwire and plate and hold the label against lateral movement, substantially as described.

The combination with a plate, of a guardwire fixed at its opposite ends to said plate and operating to embrace a label inserted between said guard-wire and plate, and a springclip comprisin g a bail G attached to the plate and a coiled spring 7 coiled about said bail and having arms 8 and 9 projecting laterally in opposite directions, the arm f) having a bent finger lO operating to grasp and hold the label against lateral movement beneath the guardavire, the end of the arm Sand the opposite ends of the bail 6 being inserted through perforations in the plate and resting in arches struck up from the rearof thcplate, substantially as described.
