Description

l ATENT 0 EFrcE.
GEORGE DAVIDSON, OF I-IEBER, ARKANSAS.
TUG FASTENER 0 ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,083, dated September 22, 1896. Application filed September 7,1895. $erla1 No. 561,834. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE DAVIDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Heber, in the county of Oleburne and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tug Fasteners or Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tug fasteners or attachments; and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple and cheap attach- -ment which can be easily applied and which in practice shall be eflicient and durable. I provide means whereby the draft-rod is prevented from turning, being so constructed and arranged that it must move in a straight line, avoiding bindingand undue friction, and it is also provided with'means for adj usting the tension of the spring which surrounds the said rod and is confined within the frame.
Another object is to provide an attachment that can be readily applied to or connected with any kind of hame or tug or trace chain.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.
The invention in this instance resides in the peculiar combinations, and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved tug attachment. Fig. 2 is a substantially central longitudinal section through the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the two views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the frame, which is flattened at one end, as shown at A, and
provided with holes for the attachment of the loop B. In the other end of the frame is an opening a, through which the draft-rod C is fitted to slide loosely, the inner end of the said draft-rod being screw-threaded and provided with a nut D, as shown. The end of the draft-rod outside the frame is flattened, as seen at O, and provided with holes for the riveting thereto of the buckle E. The sides of the frame are formed. upon their inner faces with the channels or grooves F, in which work the flanges or ribs or lugs G, extending from opposite sides of the pressure-plate H, which is held upon the inner end of the draftrod and is adjusted by the nut on the said end of the rod.
I is a spring around the draft-rod within the frame. One end finds its bearing against the outer face of the pressure-plate and the other end against the inner face of the head of the frame, as shown. The frame may be left open or it may be covered with 1eather,-
sheet metal, or any suitable material. Any form of spring maybe employed. Instead of the coiled spring shown I may sometimes employ a rubber tube sleeved upon the draftrod. Other such changes in the details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed as new is- The combination with a spring-tug, comprisinga frame with one end flattened,a loop attached at said flattened end, a recess in said frame, a draft-rod sliding in said recess and projecting through the hole a, a spiral spring surrounding said rod, means for adjusting the tension of said spring consisting of the pressure-plate H which is held upon the inner end of the draft-rod and operated by the nut on the end of the said rod, substantially as described. i
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE nAvmsoN.
