Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
ELNAYLOR, OF PEKIN, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN SASH-FASTENINGS.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, H. NAYLOR, of Pekin, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois,
have invented a new and Improved Friction Window Spring and Fastener; and I do hereby -declare that the following is a full, clear, and
thereto. Fig. 2'is a vertical section taken on the plane of the line m fr, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention consists in the employment of a catch and spring constructed and arranged in i uch manner that when the window-sash is closed the catch will catch and lock either the lower or upper sash, or, when it is desired to raise or lower the sashes, will bear against the stil' of the window with sufficient force to prevent the sash descending of its own grav ity, 3s will be presently described.
A designates the frame ot' a window, and B B' the lower and upper sash, respectively.
To the frame of the window a piece, a, is secured, to whose end there is pivoted the catch C in such manner that it will have a motion to and from the stile 0r side strip-of the window-sash. The said catch carries on its end a head, b, which will, in the caseof the lower sash, which is closed, spring over lSpecilcation forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,786. dated July 31, 1866.
the top of the said sash, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to hold or lock the same against its being opened from the outside, and the case of the upper will sink into a recess, lL, so as to hold that sash against its being opened from the outside.
The catch for the upper sash may be arranged as' that shown for the lower sash, if desired.
Between the catch C and the piece a, either a semi-elliptical spring, d, or a spiral or any other suitable kind of spring, is arranged in such manner as to continually force the catch toward the stile of the window-sash.
It will be observed that thev nose of the catch 0l will bear against the stiles or side strips of the window-frame with sufficient force to hold the sash at any given distance to which it may be raised or lowered, and that the sash, when fully closed, will be locked securely without any other fastening being needed than the catch O.
This device is simple and cheap. lt can be readily applied, and will operate efficiently for a great length of time.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure H. NAYLoE.
Witnesses:
G. J. WEBER, O'rrro S. GAITHER.
