Description

i NiTnD STATES Arnim linien.;
FRANCIS LOWEN COOCI-I AND VILLIAM HENRY LAWRENCE, OF POTLIS- VILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,808, dated September 15, 1896. Application led November l2, 1895. Serial No. 568,684. (No model.)
To all whom it mail concern'.-
Be it known that we,FRANo1s LowEN CooCH and WILLIAM HENRY LAWRENCE, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference belowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a central vertical section of a bottle or vessel provided with our improvement, and Fig. 2 a similar view of an improved form of construction, identically the same principle.
In the accompanying drawings, we have shown our invention applied to a bottle of the usual form, and in said drawings A represents a bottle provided with a neck B of any desired form, said neck being preferably enlarged at the upper end thereof, as shown at C, and said neck is also adapted to be closed by the usual cork or stopper D, in which is preferably placed a corkscrew (il, provided with a ring or handle d2.
Secured to the upper portion of the neck C or formed integrally therewith is an extension G, which is preferably of the form shown in Fig. l, and at the lower end of which is formed an annular groove g, by means of which said extension may be easily and quickly broken off, either by striking the same a sharp blow or by striking said eXtension on a table, counter, or other article. The said extension is adapted to be filled in, as shown at IAI, with cement or any preferred compound, which is placed therein in aplastic condition, and which, after it has had time to set, cannot be removed, and we also preferably pla-ce in the upper end of the extension a ball or spherical body K, composed of marble, glass, or other material, which is also surrounded with plastic cement and by means of which said ball or sphericalbody is retained in place, and said ball or spherical body also serves to prevent the removal of the cement or other material With which the extension is lled, or an attempt to do so.
The construction shown in Fig. 2 is slightly different in form from that shown in Fig. l, the extension G being larger at the bottom, and said extension is also filled in with sawdust L or other similar material, above which is placed the cement I-I in a plastic condition, and above this is placed a plate M, of marble, glass, or similar hard substances, provided with a depending plate or projecting portion m. The plate M is secured in place after the plastic cement has been inserted and before the latter has had time to set, and by this means said plate will be securely held in position and cannot be removed.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying dawings.
The bottle or other vessel is first lled with the desired contents, and the cork or stopper D is inserted, after which the extension G is filled in, as described. When it is desired to empty the bottle, the extension G is broken off, and, as will be understood, the stopper D may then be easily and quickly withdrawn. In practice the name of the manufacturer of the bottle or of the manufacturer 0r proprietor of its contents will be placed upon the extension, or a trade-mark may be placed thereon, and the absence of this feature, after the extension has been broken oif, will prove that the bottle has once been used and emptied. YV e may also place upon the bottle or vessel .any desired and descriptive matter relative to the contents of the bottle, or descriptive of the construction of the bottle and the operation thereof, and it will thus be seen that we accomplish the object of our invention by means of a simple and effective construction which does not add materially to the cost of the bottle or vessel.
Having fully described our invention, its
IOO
construction and operation, we claim and de sire to secure by Letters Patent# The combination in a bottle of the character described, provided with a neck B having an enlargement C, in the upper portion thereof and adapted to be closed by a cork or stopper D, carrying a corkscrew d provided With a ring` or handle d2, said bottle having formed on or secured to the portion C thereof a frusto-conical extension G, in the lower end of which is formed an annular groove g at the point of connection between said extension and the portion C to facilitate the breaking off of the extension, and the valve located in said extension and secured in position by cement or Suitable material, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our invention We have signed our names, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 2o 8th day of November, 1895.
FRANCIS LOWEN COOCH. VILLIAM HENRY LAWRENCE. lVitnesses:
FRANK LITTLE, BAIRD SNYDER.
