BLACKBOARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,758, dated September 15, 1896.

To all whom it nuty concern:

Be it known that I, KATE L. WEMMELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blackboards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to blackboards such as are usually employed in schools and other and similar places, and the object thereof is to provide an improved portable device of this class which is simple in construction and operation, and which may be moved from one point to another, and which is adapted for use by a number of individuals at the same time; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the practice of my invention I employ a vertical frame in which are mounted a plurality of vertically-movable blackboards and to the sides of which are hinged other and similar boards, and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improvement with one of the hinged boards open; Fig. 2, a vertical section showing all the boards in their normal position, and Fig. 3 a transverse section showing two hinged boards open.

In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown a portable frame which consists of vertical side bars or plates A, united at the top by a cross bar or plate B and provided at the bottom with base-pieces D, which are also united bya cross bar or bolt E, and this frame is strong and substantial, and formed in the inner sides of the side bars or plates A are vertical grooves or ways g, 9 and 9 in which are frictionally mounted verticallymovable blackboards h, h and h and hinged to the opposite sides of the vertical plates or bars A of the frame are similar blackboards G and H, which are adapted to be swung outwardly into the position shown in Fig. 3 or to be folded adjacent to the sides of the frame, as shown in Fig. 2.

It will be understood that each side of the boards 71,71 and h and G and H are provided with the usual black surfaces, which are formed or placed thereon in the usual manner, and it will also be understood that my invention is not limited to the number of the vertically-adjustable boards employed, or to the size of the portable frame, or to the number of the hinged boards or to the location thereof, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

This device is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive, and, as will be understood, may be quickly and easily moved from one side to another and turned into any desired position.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The herein-described blackboard, in combination with the frame provided with longitudinal slots g, 9 and g of the blackboards h, h? and k frictionally mounted in said slots and adapted to slide therein and exterior wings or boards G and H hinged to the opposite sides of the vertical portion,of said frame, whereby several persons may work at the board at the same time, as herein set forth and described.
