Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DAVID MOON, OF \VALLA WALLA, WASHINGTON.
BOOK-TU RN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,403, dated September 8, 1896.
Application filed-February 19, 1896. Serial No. 579,890. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID Moon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Walla Walla, in the county of Wallawalla and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Turners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in book-holders and leaf-turners; and it has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple and cheap device by which a book may be held open and the leaves turned by a single movement of a key.
The device is light yet strong, can be read.-
ily applied in any desired position, and is not liable to get out of order.
Other objects and advantages of the inven tion will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.
The invention resides in this instance in the peculiar combinations and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawing, and then particularly pointed out in the claim. 7
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, forms a part of this specification, and in which is rep resented a perspective view of my improved book-holder and leaf-turner.
Referring now to the details of the drawing by letter, A designates the base-piece of the book-holder and leaf-turner. It is designed to be formed of any suitable material and of any desired shape and size. That shown is a convenient one.
B are wires supported from the base=piece, and each wire is bent, as at b, to form the loop a and then extended at a right angle to the length thereof to form a horizontal arm C and thence substantially parallel with the body portion to form the arm D, which at its lower end is bent upward, as seen at c, and formed with a coil or convolute E, the end of the wire being turned outward and beveled or tapered, as shown. There are two of these wires, one upon each side of the device, as shown, and
the book is designed to be held in the spaces of the free ends thereof and to rest upon the coils or convolutes, as indicated.
The base-piece as well as the wires may be of silver or any desired material and of sufficient strength to support the book. The basepiece may be as ornamental as may be desired.
F are rods mounted for rotation in suitable bearings in the base-piece, being provided at their front ends with keys G, which are secured thereto in any suitable manner, and to the other ends of these rods are secured, preferably detachably, the wires H, each of which is forked or bifurcated, as shown, and in the space between the arms thereof is designed to be received a leaf of the book, which is held by the wires of the holder.
be turned, either one or more at a time, either one Way or the other, as may be desired.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed as new is As an improved article of manufacture, the book-holder and leaf-turner herein described, comprising the base, the wire supported from said base and said wire upon each side of its center being extended at right angles to said central portion to form a horizontal arm, thence parallel with the body portion to form arms, which are bent outwardly to form horizontal portions and thence downwardly to form depending arms the lower ends of which are bent upward and formed with coils, with the ends of the wires turned outward and tapered, and rods mounted for rotation in the base-piece and provided at their lower ends with keys, and wires detachably' secured to the upper ends of said rods and having their upper ends bifurcated to receive a leaf of the book held by the wires of the holder, all sub stantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID MOON;
Witnesses:
Gno. '1. THOMPSON, JOHN H. PEDIco.
By manipulation of the keys the leaves may
