MUSIC HOLDER AND TURNER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,7 26, dated October 20, 1896.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be itknown that I, FRED lVIITOHELL STACY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portsmouth, in the county of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music Holders and Turners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to music holders and tumors; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is adapted to be mounted on a stand, piano, or other instrument and to be used for turning sheet-music or to be connected with a music-book and used for turning the leaves thereof.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved in usic holder and turner; Fig. 2, a front view thereof; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3, and Fig. 4 a section on the line 4 4:.

In the practice of my invention I provide a base or support A, which may be composed of any desired material and finished in any de sired manner, and the baseAis provided with a vertical standard 13, on which is mounted a yoke Z), through the edge of which passes a set-screw b by means of which the yoke may be secured to the standard B at any desired point.

Secured to the sides of the yoke b is an angular rod D, having a depending end (Z, by which it is secured to said yoke, and being provided at its outer end with an upwardlydirected arm (1 and secured to the outer end of said rod or in the angle formed by the arm (:1 is a rod E, which extends parallel with the base A, and to the outer ends of which are secured two semicircular outwardly-curved rods E and the rod E is provided with ordinary spring-clamps F,which are secured thereto and which are suspended therefrom, and which are designed for use in connecting the music holder and turner with a music-book, or which may be employed for suspending or holding sheets of music.

Mounted 011 the upwardly-directed arm d of the rod D is a disk G, above which is mounted an arm g, having a circular head g and above the circular head of the arm 9 is a spiral spring 9 one end of which is secured to the arm g and the other to a standard g which is connected with the rod D, and above the spring g is another arm, 9", above which is placed a spring 9 one end of which is secured to said arm g and the other to the standard g".

The arm is curved downwardly, as shown at 9 and extends parallel with the arm g, and said arms are both free to swing on the arm d of the rod D between the curved or semicircular rods E and the object of the springs g and g is to throw said arms g and g to the left or into the position occupied by the arm 9 in Figs. 1 and 2. The outer ends of each of these arms g and g are provided with spring-clamps L, and pivotally connected with the upper curved rod E and at the right-hand side or end thereof, is a lever M, the inner end of which is provided with a hook m, and the outer end of which is provided with a depending cord or similar device m and the outer end of said lever M is also connected with a spring m one end of which is secured to the cross-rod E, as shown in Fig. 1.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing descriptiomwhen taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.

The lever M is provided centrally thereof with a depending shoulder or projection m, and in practice the arms g and g are turned around to the right or into the position occupied by the arm 9 in Figs. 1 and 2. In this position of said arms one of them will be held at each side of the shoulder or projection m* of the lever M, and the sheets or leaves of music to be turned are connected with the springclamps L. Then it is desired to turn the first leaf or sheet, the cord m is pulled downwardly, and this releases the first arm or the arm g, and at the same time the shoulder or projection or descends and prevents the other from passing out. hen the cord m is released, the last arm, passes forwardly and is held by the hook on of the lever M, and whenever it is desired to turn the sheet or leaf with which this arm is connected it is only necessary to pull the cord m as in the first instance.

This device is simple in construction and operation and is perfectly adapted to turn the sheets or leaves of music, and it is evident that my invention is not limited to the number of the pivoted arms 9 and g, and any desired number thereof may be employed.

It is also apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

Ilaving fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A music holder and turner, comprising a base, a vertical standard secured thereto, a vertieallyad;justable yoke mounted on said standard, a vertical arm connected with said yoke, a rod secured thereto, and extending parallel with the base, outwardly-curved or segmental rods connected with the ends thereof, a plurality of spring-operated arms pivotall y connected with said vertical arm, and adapted to swing between said outwardlycurved rods, said arms being provided at their outer ends with spring-clamps, or other devices for holding sheets or leaves of music and a spring-operated lever pivotally eonneeted with the upper ontwardly-curved red at one end thereof, which is provided with two downwardly-directed projections or shoulders and which is adapted to operate, substantially as shown and described.

The herein-described mnsic'holder, com prising a base A, a vertical standard 15, connected therewith, a vertically adjustable yoke 71, provided with a set-screw U mounted on the said standard, an angular red I), hav ing a depending arm d, by which the same is connected to the yoke, said rod being provided at its outer end with an upwardly-directed arm a rod E, secured to the outer end of said rod, two semicircular rods 1*) secured to said rod E, spring-clamps 1 secured to said rod E, a disk G mounted on the upwardly-directed arm (1*, an arm 1, secured above said disk and having a circular head, a spiral spring 9 above said circular head, one end thereof being secured to said arm 1, and the other to a standard which is connected with the rod 1), another arm g above the spring a spring g ahove the arm g and connected therewith, and with the standard the arm being curved downwardly and extending parallel with the arm 7, clamps L, secured to the said arms g and g, the lever-M pivotally connected with the rod E, the inner end of said lever beingprovided with a hook m and the outer end havin a depending cord m and a spring m, one end of which is connected with said lever and the other end with a rod E, all constructed and adapted to operate as set forth.
