Description

G. DECKMAN.
Chu rn JDasher. I No. 56,728. I 1 Patented July 31, 1866.

q UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE DEOKMAN, OF MALVERN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURN-DASHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,728, dated July 31, 1866.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .Gnonen DEGKMAN, of Malvern, in the county of Carroll and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ghurn-Dashers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- I Figure l is a vertical central section of my improved churn-dasher, taken through theline x m, Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, a part of the upper disk being cut away to show the construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved churn-dasher, by means of which the churning; may be done in a very short time with very little labor, and at the same time as m uch butter be produced and of as good a quality as can be produced by any other churn from the same quantity and quality of milk; and it consists of an improved dasher formed by the combinationof a double concave and a concavo-convex disk with each other and with the .dashcr-handle, as hereinafter more fully.
described.
A is the dasher-handle, to the lower end of which is attached a circular disk, B, the upper and lower surfaces of which are concave or are grooved with circular channels b and 11 as shown in Fig. 1. The edge of this disk is also fluted or grooved with a circular channel, b Through the disk B, at the bottoms or lowest parts of the channels b and b are formed apertures b, as shown. This dish B is immovably attached to the lower end of the handle A. G is a disk loosely attached to the handle A a little above the disk B, from which it is separated by the fluted or grooved washer D, as seen in Fig. 1.
The under surface or side of the disk 0 is made concave, or is grooved with a circular channel, a, and its upper side is made convex, as shown. Through this disk also, at the bottom or deepest part of the groove 0, are formed apertures 0 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The disk G is kept down to its place by a pin or key, E, passed through the handle A just above the disk 0, as shown in Fig. 1; or it may be secured in any other convenient manner.
In using the dasher, as it is forced down through the milk the tendency is to compress the milk into the groove 1), or, rather, two currents are formed flowing from the edges of the groove 1) to its bottom, where they meet and are forced through the apertures b to the upper side of the disk B. At this point it meets a portion of the current flowing over the grooved rim b of the said diskB,and is forced up over the fluted or grooved surface of the washer D into the groove 0 on the lower side of the disk 0, where it meets a current flowin g inward from the outer edge of the said disk 0, and together they are forced through the apertures c 'to the convex side of said disk, at which point another current is encountered flowing up along the convex surface of said disk. When the dasher is raised the'lower disk, B, operates in about the same manner asbefore described; but the convexity of the upper disk, 0, tends to impel the milk toward the sides of the churn, so that the dasher can be raised with a much less outlay of power than would otherwise be necessary.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved churn-dasher' formed by the combination of the double concave diskB and the concavo-couvex disk 0 with each other and with the handle A, the whole being constructed and arranged substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE DECKMAN.
