Be it known that I, JOSEPH ELLIsoN Look- WOOD, of Brighton, in the county of N orthuniberland, and Province of Ontario, Canada,
' invention is to so arrange the several parts of the lock that they can each and all be easily, readily, and cheaply manufactured and easily assembled and operated.
My invention consists of a certain combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the lock with the case partially removed, showing the locking-latch shot forward and the several parts in their normal or starting position preparatory to being operated by the tumbler-setting mechanism. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the tumblers set and the various parts in position to permit of the operation of the locking-latch. Fig. 3 is a view of the tumblers. Fig. 4 is a View of the cam for operating the lockinglatch. Fig. 5 is a View of the retaining-dog. Fig. 6 is a'view of one ofthe tumbler-operating dogs and the slide to which it is con-y nected. or latch plate ct". and an end cd. -Within the lock-case A, at or about the middle thereof, is a hollow thimble B, rigidly connected to one of the sides a. Loosely mounted on the thimble B are a series of circular tumblers C C' C. The periphery of the rim of the tumbler C is serrated or provided with a series of ratchet-teeth D for the purpose hereinafter set forth, while the side face of the tumbler C has stamped or engraved on it an indicating-dial E; that is, the side face of the tumbler C is divided into an equal number of parts, each numbered and corresponding, respectively, with the number and pitch of the ratchet-teeth D.
Projecting from the side face of the tuinbler C, between the indicating-dial E and the bearing F for the tumbler, is an annular iiange G, concentric with the rim of the tumbler. The Iiange G is so beveled that the diameter of the top of the iiange is greater than the bottom of the iiange. Encircling the flange G is a divided ring Il, correspondingly beveled and sprung on the said flange G. The space between the adjacent meeting ends 7i 71,v ofthe divided ring I'I is sufficient to receive its respective retaining-dog. Between the flange G and the bearing F is asegmental slot I, concentric with the rim of the indicat- -ing-dial E.V Through the segmental slot I passes a pin J, secured to the side o. of the lock-case A. The pin J is parallel with the thimble B and arrests the tumbler C by coming into contact with the end t' of the segmental slot I when the tumbler C has completed its movement in one direction; that is,
when throwing off the combination to lock the ylocking-latch, in order that the said tumbler can be held in its proper normal or starting position. Engaging with `the ratchetteeth D of the tumbler C is a spring-operated dog K, pivotally connected to a .horizontallydisposed slide L. The dog K 'is provided with a shoulder 76', which abuts against a stop j, connected to the bottom a of the case and so arranged as to arrest the return movement of the slide and depress the engaging end of the dog against or into the slide L when the said slide is in its return position,
to allow of the free return movement of the Ioo in the socket Z is a spring Z', which bears against the inner side of the dog K and throws the engaging end of the dog K outwardly from the slide L when the shoulder 7.2"' is not in engagement with the stop J. Connected to the slide L is a projection M, against which bears one end n of the bellscrank lever N, pivotally connected to the bottom @"oi' the lockease A. The opposite end n' of the bell-crank lever N is operated by a plunger C. The de pression of the plunger O displaces the end n' of the bell-crank lever N and causes the opposite end n to movcthe slide L and cause the dog K to rotate the tumbler C the distance of one tooth. By repeatedly operating the plunger O it is possible to move the tumbler C any number of spaces or predetermined number of spaces, as may be required. To enable the slide L to be operated from either side of the lock, I mount on the same pivotpin P two bell-crank levers N N', both operating on the same projection M and on the same side of it, in the manner hereinbefore described, and both of the bell-crank levers N N', operated by similar plungers O. To cause the sharp return of the slide to its normal or starting position, l provide the plunger O with a spring Q to throw the plunger out of engagement with the end n of its respective bell-crank lever, and I provide the slide L with a coiled spring R to throw the slide in the opposite direction to its movement by the bell-crank lever. Pivotally connected to the case A is a lever S, carrying a series of dogs T T T". YVhen the lock is locked and requires to be operated by the plungers O before it can be opened, it is necessary that the levers S and arm U be moved to remove the head V from engagement from the ends of the said slides. This is accomplished in the manner hereinafter set forth. Mounted on the top of the tumbler C is a tumbler C', and mounted on the tumbler C' is a third tumbler C". The tumblers C' C" are similarly constructed to the tumbler C and are operated by dogs K' K", connected to the slides L' L", similar in all respects with the slide L and operated in a similar manner. The divided ring H' for the tumbler C' is provided between its adjacent meeting ends with a notch or space k', while the divided ring Il" is provided with a similar notch or space 7a", the notches or spaces 7u' k" corresponding in size and purpose with the notches or spaces 7L". By setting the notch or space of any one of the divided rings over any particular division on the indicating-dial it Will be necessary to depress the plunger O, operating on the tumbler, the
number of times indicated by the numeral on the said division, in order that the said tumbler can be rotated a distance equal to that number of teeth; that is, if the notch or space is set opposite the division on the indicating dial marked 7 it will be necessary to operate the respective plunger C seven times, in order that the tumbler can be moved a distance equal to the distance of seven teeth. Bearing on the back of the lever S and against the top a' of the lock-case A is a spring lV to throw the lever S toward the tumblers C C' C", in order that the dogs T T T" may enter their respective notches or spaces 7L" 7.1' 7c", respectively, when the said notches or spaces are in alinement. Revolving on the top of the thimble B is a cam X, which at a certain part of its revolution engages with a key-bit Y, pivotally connected to the lockinglatch Z. In the top of the key-bit Y is an elongated slot A', into which projects a pin A", extending from the side of the lever S. against the periphery of their respective tumblers C C' C", the lever S is moved into the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings and displaces the key-bit Y to prevent its operation by the cam X. Connected to the case A is a spring B' to shoot forward the lockinglatch Z. Formed centrally through the cam X is an opening D', and surrounding the opening D' is a collar D".` The collar D" [its into the thimble B, and the inner face of the collar D" is iitted to engage with a knobspindle B", passing through the door and lock. On the inside of the door and surrounding the knob-spindle B" is a knob-plate E', and within the knob-plate E' is a lockingtumbler E", the periphery of which 'is provided with three notches e e' e".
lVorlzing within the knob-plate E' is a sliding bar F', provided on its under side with two lugs G' G". The lugs G' G" are a sufficient distanee apart to permit of the lockingtumbler E" being turned in either direction without coming into engagement with any of the notches when the sliding bar F' is in such a position as to place both ot' the said lugs G G" beyond the periphery o the locking tumbler E". When the sliding bar F' is so moved as to bring the lug G' into engagement with the notch e, the rotary movement of the tumbler E" and the spindle '13" is limited to allow of the locking-latch being released and shot forward to asufiicient extent to permit of the opening or closing of the door without throwing oil' the combination. lVhen the lug G' is within the notch c, it is necessary for the dogs T T' T" to be in their respective notches and their respective seting-rin gs, in order that the operation ofthe locking-latch can be accomplished. 3y allowing the locking-tumbler t" andthe linobspindle B" a limited movement it is possible to turn the knob-spindle sufficiently to release the locking-latch and to allow of the return of the knob-spindle asui'ficient distance to shoot forward the locking-latch without allowing the cam to throw off the combination. leased position, the sliding bar F is moved to bring the lug Gl into engagement with the notch e', and to lock the locking-latch when shot forward the sliding bar F is moved to bring the lug G into such a position that it will enter the notch e". When the lug G is in either of the notches e e, itis utterly impossible to revolve the knob-spindle to any extent whatever, and consequently the locking-latch is locked either in its released or its shot position. The cam X is provided with a projecting lug or pin so, which is adapted to come into contact with the end e" of the segmental slot I in each of the tuniblers C C C to return the tumblers to their normal or starting position when the combination has been thrown off.
The operation of the lock is as follows: The revolution of the cam X in the direction indicated by arrows in Fig. 2 of the drawings causes the pin x to return the tumblers C C C to their normal or starting position. Assuming that tumbler C is set on 7 ,tumbler C is set on 8, and tumbler C is set on 10, it will be necessary to depress the plunger O seven times to operate the bell-crank lever N a corresponding number of times to move the tumbler C forward a distance of seven tooth-spaces, in order that the notch in the setting-ring will be brought opposite its respective retaining-dog. The tumbler C will be moved a distance equal to three toothspaces to bring the notch in its respective setting-ring opposite its respective retainingdog, and the tumbler C will be moved forward a distance of ten tooth-spaces for the same purpose. When the tumblers have been moved forward their respective distances, the notches in the respective setting-rings will be in alinement with the retaining-dogs, and the retaining-dogs will enter their respective notches in the setting-rings and securely hold the tumblers in their set position until after the locking-latch has been operated and the combination of the tumbers has been thrown off by the action of the pin or lug .fr of the cam X. It has hereinbefore been stated that the key-bit Y is provided with an elongated slot A,into which projects a pin A extending from the top of the lever S. As the lever S carries the retaining-dogs the entry of the retaining-dogs into their respective notches in their respective setting-rings permits the spring WV to throw the lever S toward the periphery of the tumblers to bring the hookshaped part y of the key-bit Y into engagement with the hook-shaped part x of the cam X to allow of the cam a; drawing rearwardly the said key-bit. As the key-bit Y is connected to the locking-latch Z, the said keybit during its rearward movement carries with it the locking-latch Z. Vhen the pressure on the cam X is released, the spring B shoots forward the locking-latch Z, and the cam X is turned by the hand of the operator in the direction opposite to the releasement 0f the locking-latch to bring the tumblers again into alinement, the operation of the lunOers bein01 aO'ain re eated when it is necp D b D essary to bring the tumblers C C C" into alinement to allow of the releasing of the locking-latch.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A combination-lock, comprising a suitable casing, a sliding bolt therein, a key-bit pivotally connected to said bolt and provided with a lon gitudinally-arranged slot, a series of rotatable tumblers, a series of spring-actuated slides, a spring-actuated dog in each slide to move the tumblers, a stock in the casing to depress the dogs, a lever S, pivotally supported in the casing and formed with dogs on its free end, and having a lug or pin on its side to engage in the slot of the keybit, an arm carried by said lever, and formed with a head to engage the tumbler-slides, a cam to engage the key-bit, and plungers to operate the tumbler-slides, as specified.
2. A combination-lock, comprising a casing formed or provided with a hollow thimble7 a series of circular tumblers journaled on the thimble, and having segmental slots adjacent to the thimble, land provided with ratchet-teeth on their periphery, and the outer tumbler formed with an annular beveled flange, divided rings on the flange, a fixed pin projected through the segmental slots of the tumblers, a cam journaled on the thimble and formed with a notch, a sliding bolt in the casing, a key-bit pivoted to the bolt, and formed with a catch to engage the notch of the cam, a lever S, formed with dogs on the free end, slides under the tumblers formed with lugs7 spring-dogs pivoted in slides to engage the tumblers, bell-crank levers to engage lugs on the slides, a lever between the lever S and the slides, formed with a head to lodge against the end of the slides, and plungers to operate the bell-crank levers, substantially as set forth.
3. A combination-lock, comprising a lockcasing, a locking-latch within the casing, a plurality of rotatable tumblers within the casing, an adjustable setting-ring formed with a notch, carried by each tumbler to vary the combination of the lock, a lever formed with dogs on its free end to engage the notches of the setting-rings, a key-bit pivoted to the locking-latch, and arranged to be lifted by the lever carrying the dogs on its free end, and a rotatable cam to engage the key-bit, substantially as described.
4. In a combination-lock, the combination with the series of suitably journaled tumblers formed with a segmental slot adjacent to their bearings, and a pin fixed to the casing and projected into the segmental slot, whereby the rotation of the tumblers is limited, substantially as specified.
