NECK-YOKE CENTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,782, dated September 1 1896.

To all whom it may con-cern:
Be it known that I, TARGE G. MANDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stoughton, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yoke Centers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates to improvements in neck-yoke centers and pole-tips for vehicles; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same, whereby the neck-yoke center may be securely connected with the pole-tip, so that in case the traces should break or become unloosened the yoke will be held in place on the pole-tip, thus preventing accidents, while at the same time the yoke can be readily disengaged when desired.
The invention consists in the novel con-v struction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a central longitudinal section of a neck-yoke and pole-tip constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the pole-tip, the yoke being removed. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the yoke-center.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral l designates the pole-tip, consisting of a socket, preferably of malleable iron, which rits upon the end of a vehicle-tongue and is formed with an inclined iiange 2, forming a holdback for the neck-yoke. On its upper side, intermediate the holdback and the outer end of the tip, the tip is formed with a beveled notch 3.
The numeral e designates the neckyoke, which may be of any suitable construction, formed with a plate e', secured thereto by bolts or otherwise and formed with a central loop 5, with which engages a loop G of the neck-yoke center 7. This center consists of a tapering sleeve 8, corresponding with the contour of the pole-tip, and on its upper side is formed with a slot 9. At each side of this slot are two arms l0, which are formed integral with the loop 6. Located in the space between said arms is a dat sprin g l2, the front end of which is bent downward and adapted to engage with the notch in the pole-tip. The opposite end of this spring is bolted to the rear end of the sleeve. At the lower side the sleeve is formed with an extension 13, having a rectangular recess therein in which is seated a rectangular block of rubber or other elastic material.
In practice the pole-tip is inserted in the sleeve and the latter pushed thereon until the bent end of the spring passes the notch in the tip, when the resiliency of the spring will cause its bent end to be forced downward and engage with the front edge of the notch. By this means the center and yoke will be securely held in place, preventing the latter from being disengaged from the tip should the traces be broken or become loosened. The spring will also cause the rubber cushion to bear against the pole-tip, whereby rattling of the center is prevented.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim isl. As an improved article, a neck-yoke center comprising the sleeve, the arms secured thereto formed with a loop, and the. spring secured to said sleeve, located between said arms and having its outer end bent downward, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article, a neck-yoke center comprising the sleeve formed with an extension on its under side, the elastic bunter seated in a recess in said extension, the arms secured to said sleeve formed with a loop, the forwardly-projecting spring secured to said sleeve, extending beyond the front end of the sleeve and having its end bent downward, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a pole-tip formed with a notch, of the neck-yoke center comprising the sleeve formed with an extension having a recess therein, the elastic cushion seated in said recess, the arms and loop formed with or secured to said sleeve, and the bent spring secured to said sleeve; substantially as described.
