COMBINED AXLE AND SPRING CLIP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,092, dated March 25, 1890.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM LoUIs BUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Watertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Spring-Connection, Axle-Clip, and Pole or Shaft Coupling; and I do declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clips for carriages; and it consists of a certain novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will hereinafter more fully appear inthe specification, and

be pointed out in the claim.

The object of the invention is to construct a clip which shall be especially adapted for i use in connection with spring-vehicles, such as is more particularly described in a patent granted to John WV. WVhittic, September 22, 1885, No. 326,823.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and on which similar letters of reference indicate the same or corresponding features, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one of the axles, showing the springsupport connected thereto and giving a front view of the clip proper. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 0c 00 of Fig. 1,

and showing the rear end of one of the shafts longitudinally with the offsets andterminating at its inner end in an eye to which the spring-coupling G is attached, the spring itself H being attached to this latter coupling. The spring-support, as already observed, is securely fastened by the screw-threaded extensions, the forward end of which, or that end which faces the animal drawing the vehicle, consists at its upper portion of a somewhat broadened plate I, which extends down ashort distance and out from which in a longitudinal plane project the walls J of the clip proper. The under surface of the plate I terminates in the same plane with the Walls of the clip, and from this point it is comparatively small and screw-threaded to form the bolt 0. The walls J of the clip are of course provided with apertures in which fits the rear end L of the shafts, said end being secured by a bolt or otherwise, as may be desired.

It will be observed that I construct my clip and spring-support of one'piece, thereby preventing any looseness or jarring of parts which might otherwise occur, and also at the same time cheapening the cost of manufac ture of the article and rendering it stronger and lighter. v

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a device of the characterherein described, the combination, with the axle having a depressed central portion and provided. with offsets at its ends, of a spring 11, spring-coupling G, spring-support mounted on said 01fsets and consisting of a bar having an eye at its inner end through which said spring-coupling is secured to it, a clip formed integral with the said support, an inverted-V'shaped piece having screw-threaded extremities O, and nuts D, all substantially as shown and described.
