NEWSPAPER-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,254, dated August 18, 1896. Application filed January 30, 1896. Serial No. 677,441. (No model) To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LINLEY G. WADE, acitizen of the United States, residing at Holly, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Newspaper- Holder, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to newspaper and mail holders, and particularly to a device adapted for attachment to a house-door or door-jamb or similar vertical 'supportingsurface contiguous to and within reach from a house door or window whereby newspapers or similar articles placed therein by carriers maybe reached by the occupants of the house without exposure; and the object in view is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of the class named in which the supporting-surface against which it is secured forms the back of the holder, the front of the latter being constructed to expose advertising matter.

Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of a holder-spring and the contiguous portion of the casing or shell.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

The casing or shell 1 of the holder embodying my invention is preferably rectangular in horizontal section with a closed top to protect the contents from rain, snow, and the like, said top being inclined or rounded to form a watershed, and having an open bottom and an open rear side. The sides and top of the casing or shell are flanged, as at 2, to bear against a vertical supporting-surface, such as that indicated at 3 in Figs. 1 and 2, and a holdingspring 4, arranged within the casing or shell, is adapted to bear toward said supporting-surface to clamp a newspaper or similar article against the same, as shown in Fig. 2. This holding -spring is preferably constructed of wire, and in practice I bend it to form a loop of which the extremities of the arms 5 are bent laterally to form stiifening extensions 6, arranged in a roll 7 at the lower edge of the front of the shell or casing, thereby forming a bead to strengthen said lower edge and at the same time insure the permanent attachment of the spring to the shell or casing.

The front of the shell or casing is provided with an opening 8, in rear of which is arranged a transparent plate or medium 9, adapted to support an advertising card or sheet, said plate or medium being held in place in the casing by means of upper and lower clips 10, rigidly secured to the rear surface of the front side thereof. In practice the advertising matter may be inscribed upon the transparent plate or medium, which is removable by reason of the pliability of the clips 10, or a card or advertising-sheet may be pasted upon the rear surface of the plate or medium to be exposed therethrough.

By arranging the holding-spring to bear at its free end against the supporting-surface 3, as shown in Fig. 2, the device is adapted to receive and hold letters and other small articles in addition to newspapers.

It will be seen from the foregoing description that the device embodying my invention is simple in construction as well as efficient and may be manufactured at a small cost, whereby it is adapted to be used as a vehicle for advertising matter distributed by the merchant in whose interest the advertisement is made.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
