Description

W. H. BURNS.
WAIST (No Model.)
No. 565,959. I PaAzented Aug. 18, 1896.
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE;
WILLIAM HENRY BURNS, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
WAIST.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,959, dated August 18, 1896,
Application filed March 23,1896. Serial Na 584,472. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that LWILLIAM HENRY BURNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vaists; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to underwaists designed particularly for childrens use, and has for its object to produce a waist that shall readily adapt itself or yield to the movements of the body of the wearer, and thereby insure comfort and ease and prevent the breaking of buttons or other devices that may be employed to secure other articles to the waist.
The drawing represents the garment in elevation with one flap turned back and one in the position occupied when the garment is worn.
A indicates the body of the waist, which is provided with more or less elastic shoulderstraps O. The body is in the form of a band to pass around the body of the wearer and have its free end secured by buttons or otherwise, and it is preferably stayed by strengthening-strips F, as illustrated. It is obvious that the band may open either at the back or front of the wearer and that it may be cut according to any appropriate pattern.
A belt B is suspended bya series of elastic straps D to the body A, one of the elastic straps at each side of the waist, atthe underarm portion thereof, being in line with a shouL der-strap. These straps may be sewed or otherwise attached tothe part of the garment, and obviously may, to secure a better finish and make the garment stronger, be inserted between plies of the garment and be bound at each end by the strengthening-strips before mentioned.
E indicates stocking-supporters, shown as attached to the bottom of the body A, in line with the shoulders, and having elastic ends E, though the supporters may be in whole or in part elastic or inelastic, as desired.
The weight of this garment and of any garments held by it are borne by the shoulders of the wearer. The elastic shoulder-straps give an easy movement and distribute the Weight borne by the belt and the strain of the supporters, while the elastic bands joining the separate belt and body give the fullest freedom, ease, and distribution of weight, with aminimum of wear and tear upon the securing devices of the waist.
The alining of a shoulder-strap, a garmentsupporter, and an elastic strap on each side of the waist is a peculiar feature of this invention, the arrangement securing the most immediate and equable distribution of strain without injury to the garments or discomfort to the wearer.
The underwaist is adapted to carry drawers, shirts, trousers, stockings, and all similar articles of apparel.
Every feature of sewing economy and finish may of course be applied to this underwaist, and the elastic bands may from time to time be renewed.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim is- A garment having a body portion bearing shoulder-straps, a belt suspended from the WILLIAM HENRY BURNS.
