UNITED STATES EDWARD F. OBRIEN, OF NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO DANIEL PATENT OFFICE.
F. OBRIEN, OF SAME PLACE.
HOSE-SUPPORTE-R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,920, dated August 18, 1896.
Ap li ation filed May}, 1896. Serial No. 590,165. (No model.)
T0 to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hose-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to that class of hosesupporters in which a narrow tape-shaped fabric or webbing is employed, such webbing being adapted in mens hose-supporters to extend around the leg above the calf, and in ladies hose-supporters to extend from the upper edge of the stocking up to and be connected with the corset.
In an application of even date herewith for Letters Patent for an improvement in hosesupporters I have combined with the clasp and a non-elastic webbing an intermediate elastic ring.
In this present invention or improvement I combine a webbing, a clasp consisting of a. plate provided with a pair of longitudinallyarranged holes, inwardly-folding wings and a button and an intermediate elastic cord held at one end under one of said wings and arranged to extend through the holes and under the other wing in the manner below described and produce a loop for catching over the button, said cord connecting the clasp with the webbing.
The nature of the invention in detail is fully described below and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is aview of a mans hose-supporter embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a view of thesame in position upon the limb and grasping the upper edge of the stocking. Fig. 3 is a view of my improvement applied to a ladys hose-supporter, a small portion of one clasp being shown in section. Fig. 4
is an enlarged rear elevation of the clasp.'
Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the same.

A represents a strip of webbing made in the usual shape and provided with the ordinary adjusting-slide a. Its ends are looped in the ordinary manner and thus connected With the hooks B, provided with the slotted shanks B.
The clasp consists of the flatmetallic plate C, made broader at its lower end and provided at said end with the button D. This plate is furnished with a hole E near or slightly above its central portion, and is furnished with the clamping wings or folds C. An elastic cord H is looped over the hooks B, while one end extends down between the surface of the upper portion of the plate 0, and is held at that point by one of the folds or wings O, which is pressed tightly upon it. The other end H of .the elastic cord H is also held under the same fold O, and thence extends downward and through a hole E made centrally in the plate 0 next or behind the lower ends of the folds O. Thence this portion of the cord extends through the hole E to the front side of the plate, is formed into a loop H at that point, and thence extends through the hole E to the rear side of the plate, thence back through the hole E to the front side of the plate, where it is tightly clamped and held by the other fold C, from which it extends up into the main portion H.
As both cords H or portions of the cord H are held by the clamps O,the elastic loop is free to be drawn and stretched over the button 'D after the hose has been laid upon said button, as indicated in Fig. 2, without affecting the portions H which are between the clasp and the hooks 13.. Thus the cutting of the stocking, which is commonly the result of a metallic clasp or loop, over the button D is obviated by my elastic loop H. Moreover, an intermediate elastic connection is produced between the webbing A and the clasp without making such connection in the shape of a ring or circular band.
In applying this improvement to ladies hose-supporters, as illustrated in Fig. 3, an elastic cord L is passed over the hook N, which is secured to the web K, whose upper end is secured in any desired manner to the corset. Each of the ends of the elastic cord L extends under one fold O and is thereby held immovably, thence rearward through the hole E, forward through the hole E, formed in front of the plate 0 into a loop, thence back through the hole E, and forward through the hole E, leaving its extreme end to be held by the other clamp C.
Having thus fully described my invention which is arranged to extend as described what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters rearward through the upper hole E and for- Patent, is ward through the lower hole E whereby the In ahose-supporter, the combination of the loop ll is produced, and thence up through I 5 5 clasp consisting of the plate 0 providedwith said holes and under the opposite Wing G,
the holes E and E placed one above the substantially as set forth. other and in a substantially longitudinal line the inwardly-folding Wings 0 and the button EDYVARD F. OBRIEN. held by and under one of said folds O, and \VILFRED LARO.
