SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,785, dated August 11,4896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ANTON OHNEMUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams, State of Illinois, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certainnew and useful improvements in heating-stoves; and it has for its object to provide a foot-rail or foot-rails which are bolted to the feet or legs of the stove, being free at their upper por tions and not. entering or secured to the body portion of the stove, but simply bearing thereagainst, so that the tighter the bolts are drawn the harder the upper portion will bear against the body of the stove.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the let-' ters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in whic Figure l is a perspective view of my improved stove with a portion of the urn broken away; and Fig. 2 is a detail in vertical section, showing manner of attaching the footrest to the leg.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the two views.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the sheet-metal cylinder or body portion of the stove, supported upon the ring or base portion A in the usual manner and preferably provided with a lining B, retained within the same concentric with the body portion.

D is the urn, having a depending flange d to engage over the neck or collar on the top of the stove.

I am aware that it has been proposed to provide a stove with a foot rail or rest secured at the upper portion thereof to the metal cylinder, leaving the lower portion unattached; but this has been found obj ectionable, for the reason that the weight placed upon the foot-rail not only forces the lower portion down and tends to break the rest, but continued pressure on the foot rail or rest soon breaks loose or wears its connection with the sheet-metal cylinder at the one end or the other, so that the foot-rest sags and becomes out of true and liable to be broken. Furthermore, the removal of the cylinder is necessary in order to replace the rest, and the cylinder cannot be removed or replaced without removing the foot rail or rest therefrom, whereas by my construction the rail is entirely independent of and disconnected from the cylinder, so that the latter may be removed or replaced at will, and, being secured at the lower portion, pressure on the rest or rail does not affect the fastenings, but serves rather to more securely bind the lower portions of the foot-rail in. position, prevents sagging, and the rest simply moves slightly downward under weight, as upon a pin or bolts 9, as upon pivots, and when pressure is removed the foot-rest automatically as sumes its normal position.

What I claim as new is-- In a stove, the combination with the body portion, and the legs, of a foot-rail independent of the body portion secured to the legs below the bottom of the stove, and provided with upwardly and inwardly extending portions, disconnected from and bearing loosely against the body portion of the stove; substantially as described.
