SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,570, dated August 11, 1896.

Be it known that I, EDWARD ROWE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming'a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. j j This invention relates to mechanical toys; and the'object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is designed to amuse and entertain children and others.

The invention is fully disclosed inthe following specification, of which the accompaing drawings form a part, in which Figure l is a side view of my improved toy with a part of the base thereof removed, and Fig. 2 a section on the line 2 2.

In the practice ofA my invention I provide a toy which comprises two base'plates or bars A, and which are arranged side by side and united by cross-pieces a, which are secured at each end to the under side thereof, and between said cross plates or bars A is a space a2, and one of the side plates or bars A is provided at one end with a tubular shaft B. in which is mounted a vertically-movable iiagstaff Z9, at the upper end of which is an American flag, as shown at b2.

The flagstaff b is supported in the tubular shaft B by a spring b3, and said tubular shaft is provided with a vertical slot b4, in which moves a pin b5, which is secured to the flagstad and which is adapted to enter a notch or recess Z9, formed in the shaft B, at one side of said slot or groove, and near the opposite end of the plate or bar A, with which the tubular shaft B is connected, is another flagstaft' C, at the upper .end of which is an English flag, as shown at O2.

At the end of the base, adjacent to the iiagstaff B, is a iigure D of `a man, the feet thereof being placed between the base plates or bars A, one of which is pivotally supported therein, as shown at d, and provided with a depending extcnsion d2, to which is pivotally secured a rod cl3, which extends horizontally through or part way through the space c2, and which abuts against a curved spring G, which is pivotally supported at g, and the upper end of which projects upwardly and is provided with an arm g2, and the lower end of which extends downwardly and backwardly and is provided with a hook g3, which is adapted to engage with a pin g4, which is arranged transversely of the space a2.

Adjacent to the ilagstaff C is another figure of a man, which is designated by the reference -letter I-I, and the feet of which are placed between the plates or bars A, one of which, as shown at h, is pivotally supported at h2, and provided with a depending extension h3, and the arm g, and t-he spring G is adapted to abut against the toe of the foot h of the ligure I-I, and secured to the other foot of said figure is a spring K, to which is secured a figure L, which also represents a man,

and which in the normalposition of the parts or in the position shown in Fig. l is held in the space between the plates or bars A, and said igureL is provided with an ax M, and

said figure and said aX are connected by side boards m, the sides of which are irregular in form and designed in practice to represent bushes.

The figure D is provided with a coat, which is provided with a tail N, which projects downwardly and backwardlyv and which is adapted to operate the pin or projection b5, and each of said iigures D and II is provided with a tubular arm O, which is held thereby and into which fire-crackers P are adapted to be inserted. j

Placed in front of the figure D is a figure R, which is designed to represent a woman in a kneeling posit-ion and which is represented as supplicating or pleading `with the figure D, the idea being that said iigure is imploring protection from the figure D, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.

In practice an ordinary fire-cracker is placed in each of the projecting arms O of the figures D and II and the fuse thereof ignited.

When the explosion occurs, the figure D will be forced backwardly by the force of the explosion, and the tail N vof the coat with IOO which said gure is provided will strike the pin or projection b5 on the staff h, driving said pin backwardly into the vertical slot b4, and the spring b3 will raise the flagstaff 7i and the iiag connected therewith at the same time, and the movement of the figure D will force the rod d3 in the direction of the spring G, and the hook g3 thereof will strike the extension 71,3 and the foot h of the figure II, and said ligure will be forced or fall forwardly and at the same time the figure L will be thrown upwardly by the spring K and will strike said figure I-I in the back with the ax M.

When the hook g3 of the spring G is forced backwardly, the upwardlydirected arm 7c will be forced in the direction of the figure R, and the connection thereof with the foot 7i, of the figure I-I is broken, whereby said figure is allowed to fall forwardly, and it will be understood that the figures may be returned to their normal positions, as shown in Fig. l, and the above-described operation may be repeated as often as desired.

It will be understood that the figures D and II may represent any desired subjects, and the flags b2 and Cfl may represent the flags of any nations, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the various parts of my improved toy may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

I-Iaving fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters .Patentl. In a mechanical toy, the combination with a suitable base, of two pivotally-supported figures, said figures being normally held in an upright position, and being each provided with a tubular arm, said arms being adapted to vreceive fire-crackers, an d one of said figures being adapted to be forced backwardly at the explosion of the cracker which it supports and the other`being adapted to be thrown forwardly at the same time, substantially as shown and described.

2, In a mechanical toy, the combination with a suitable base, of two pivotally-support ed figures, said figures being normally held in an upright position, and being each provided with a tubular arm, said arms being adapted to receive lire-crackers, and one of said figures being adapted to be forced backwardly at the explosion of the cracker which it supports and the other being adapted to be thrown forwardly at the same time, said base being also provided adjacent to the figure which is adapted to be thrown backwardly with a tubular standard in which is-mounted a spring-opera ted flagstaff which is normally held in a depressed position and which is adapted to be released and thrown upwardly by said figure, substantially as shown and described.

In a mechanical toy, the combination with a suitable base, of two pivotally-supported figures, said figures being normally held in an upright position, and being each provided with a tubular arm, said arms being adapted to receive fire-crackers, and one of said figures being adapted to be forced backwardly at the explosion of the cracker which it supports and the other being adapted to be thrown forwardly at the same time, said base being also provided adjacent to the 'figure which is adapted to be thrown backwardly with a tubular standard in which is mounted a springoperated fiagstaff which is normally held in a depressed position and which is adapted to be released and thrown upwardly by said figure, and an additional figure which represents a man holding an ax, and which is secured to the foot of the figure which is adapted to be forced forwardly by means of a spring, substantially as shown and described.

4. In a mechanical toy, the combination with a suitable base, two pivotally-supported figures, said figures being normally held in an upright position and being each provided with a tubular arm, said arms being adapted to receive fire-crackers, and one of said figures being adapted to be forced backwardly at the explosion of the cracker which it supports, and the other being adapted to be thrown forwardly at the same time, said base being also provided adjacent to the gure which is adapted to be thrown backwardly with a tubular standard in which is mounted a springoperated flagstaff which is normally held in a depressed position and which is adapted to be released by said figure and thrown upward by said spring, an additional figure which represents a man holding an aX, and which is secured to the foot of the figure which is adapted to be forced forwardly by means of a spring, and an additional iiagstaff provided with a fiag adjacent to the figure to the foot of which the figure with the ax is secured, substantially as shown and described.

5. In .a mechanical toy, the combination with a suitable base, of two pivotally-supported figures, said figures being normallyheld in an upright position, and each being provided with a tubular arm, said arms being adapted to receive fire-crackers, and one of said figures being adapted to be forced backwardly at the explosion of the cracker which it supports, and the other being adapted to be thrown forwardly at the same time, said base being also provided adjacent to the figure which is adapted to be thrown backwardly with a tubular standard in which is mounted a springoperated fiagstaff which is normally held in a depressed position and which is adapted to be released by said figure and thrown upward by said spring, and an additional figure which represents a man holding an ax, and which is secured to the foot of the figure which is adapted to be forced forwardly by means of a spring, and an additional agstaff provided with a flag adjacent to the gure to the foot of which the figure with the aX is secured, and devices for connecting the figures which IOO IIO

are held in an upright position Whereby both of them are caused to move at the same time, substantially as shown and described.

6. In a mechanical toy, the combination With a suitable base, of two pivotally-supported figures, said igures being normally held in an upright position, and being each provided With a tubular arm, said arms being adapted to receive fire-crackers, and one of said Iigures being adapted to be forced backWardly at the explosion of the cracker which it supports and the other being adapted to be thrown forwardly at the same time, and said base being provided with a figure which represents a Woman in a kneeling position and which faces 15 ence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 7th zo day of April, 1896.
