COMBINED BOTTLE AND CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,373, dated August 4, 1896.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM SPARKS THOMSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bottle and Case, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has for its object to envelop a bottle and its stopper so as to adequately secure the stopper in place, prevent the escape of the volatile portions of smelling-salts, perfumes, &c., protect the bottle from injury, and to permit the upper portion of the bottle to be exposed for exhibition and sale and hold it in an upright position without the use of any extraneous support; and to this end I provide the bottle with a flexible case, divided at the top so as to be opened to expose the top of the bottle and contents or closed so as to secure the stopper in place, and the top is preferably provided with a clasp of such a character that it may be turned down to constitute a support therefor, as fully set forth hereinafter, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bottle and case embodying myimprovement; Fig. 2, a side View of the bottle with the case open; Fig. 3, a plan of Fig. 2.

The bodyA of the bottle is of anysuitable shape and proportions and is shown as provided with an ordinary ground-glass stop: per B.

The body portion A fits within the body of a case 0, which, as shown, is of leather or other flexible material, and has two separated parts beyond the body, which may be brought together to form a closed envelop. Thus they are connected at their adjacent edges to the yokes a b of a clasp D, which are hinged together at 00 and provided with locking-buttons e e or other suitable fastening devices.

The yokes are of such form that when clasped together to extend over the stopper the sides of the case are also brought to partially overlap and bear firmly on the sides and top of the stopper, thus holding it in position. By this means the stopper is maintained under such a pressure as holds it to its seat and effectually seals the bottle, so that even the volatile portions of the contents cannot escape; but the clasp can be readily opened, whereupon the stopper can be removed without unscrewing any part.

Generally the body portion A should be detachable from the case, so as to permit one bottle to be substituted for another, but if desired the body of the case may be permanently connected to the body of the bottle as in other bottles covered in whole or part with leather.

From the construction and arrangement shown and described it will be seen that the specific purpose of this feature of the invention is to prevent the escape of the volatile contents of the contained bottle while handling or carrying the bottle in the pocket.

The divided parts of the envelop may be connected together when closed to hold the stopper in place in any suitable manner. I prefer to make use of the hinged yokes, as

shown, of such proportions and arrangement that they serve a twofold purpose. Thus when brought together they hold together the divided parts of the envelop, forminga closed envelop and securing the stopper in place so tightly that even volatile portions of the contents cannot escape, while when turned down to the diagonal position shown in Fig. 2 they brace and support the bottle in an upright position. By this means I avoid the necessity of making use of racks or other means of supporting the bottle on a case or counter, and the upper part of the bottle and contents are exposed, permitting the shape of the bottle and character of the contents to be observed.

Without limiting myself to the precise construction of the parts shown, I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with a bottle containing a volatile substance, and with the stopper thereof, of a casing receiving said bottle and stopper, the said casing being partially divided to form separating portions provided with a clasp or locking device, and adapted, when closed, to engage and hold the stopper within the bottle, whereby the volatile contents of the said bottle are prevented from escaping, substantially as shown and for the purpose described.

2. The combination with a bottle, of a flexible sac or envelop inclosing the same, di-

vided at its top and provided with a two-part clasp, the parts of which are secured to the edges of the envelop and hinged together as described whereby the clasp serves the twofold purpose of securing the stopper when closed and of supporting the bottle when opened and turned diagonally downward, substantially as described.
