IM PROVEM ENT IN PADLOCKS.

`To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, CYRUS W. SALADEE, of Newark, county of Licking, State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Padlocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact descrption thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists, first, in that of securing to the top surface of the tumbler A the guard-ring O, to prevent the passing from the key-hole of the lock any instrument which may be introduced for the purpose of picking77 the lock; second, in that lof making' the key-stud X a part of the tumbler A, whereby to save the time and cost of setting the same in the back of the lock, as is now the universal practice; and, third, in that of providing the front of the tumbler A with an arm, F, which is to serve as a stop for the tumbler when thrown forward by the spring E, and at the same time to receive the springstud B.

In the drawings, Figure l represents a front view of the lock with the cover removed, showing the working parts of the same. Fig. 2 is a view in section, showing the connection of the guard-ring O and key-stud X and springstnd B with the tumbler A.

The tumbler A is of the form substantially as shown, on the top of which is secured, by being cast solid, or in any other rigid manner, the guard-ring O, which extends up against the under side of the lid of the lock. Within this rin g, a little above its center point, I secure the key-stud X by casting the same solid or otherwise rigidly connecting it with the tumbler at that point. On the bottom side of the tum bler A,.opposite the center point of the guardring C, l connect in a like permanent manner the stud S, (see Fig. 2,) which stud is made to drop into a corresponding hole in the back plate of the lock, for the purpose of keeping the tumbler in its intended position.

To the front of the tumbler I form the arm F as a part of the tumbler A, into which is secured the stud B to receive the end of the spring E, and to serve as a stop to the tumbler when it is thrown forward by the force of the spring.

Any number of the ordinary wards may be secured on the top of the tumbler within the circle of the guard-ring O for the key to pass over, and the usual variety of key may be produced.

The operation of the key within this guardring is about the same as in my former applications, A and B, which were allowed on the 22d and 24th days of November, 1865, .but differing in that of this having the key-stud set ont of the center of the circle of the gnardring O and leaving the circle of the ring perfeet and not broken, as in the cases above referred to. The stud for the key being set outside of the center of the guard-ring O, the outer edge of the key is made to come iirmly in contact with the ring at that point where the distance between the inside surface of the ring and the key-stud begins to shorten, and the tumbler is thus thrown back out of the hook of the hasp.

Having thus fully described my invention, l claim- 1. As constructed, the tumbler A with 'the guardring O attached, as described, and operating as set forth, in combination with the spring E, for the purposes set forth and described.

2. The key-stud X and short stud S on tumbler A, constructed as described and for the purposes set forth.
