Description
QUINBY & STURDEVANT.
Y Brbom Head.
Patented July 17, 1866.
Inv 6 11, Z'O 17 W ne-336s. @194. g
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
M. Q'UINBY AND J. O. STU RDEVANT, OF SKINNERS EDDY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BROOM-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56.446, dated July 17, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MOSES QUINBY and JOHN G. STURDEVANT, of Skinners Eddy, in the county of WVyoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Broom- Head; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the metallicjaws, screw, and socket, without the binders attached. Fig. 2 is a front view of the stationmy jaw and hinder. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the metallic jaws, screw, and socket; and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the entire broom.
Similar letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
The nature of our invention consists in the employment of two jaws hinged together, and having binders at their extremities, which are made to grasp the broom-straw securely by means of a screw connecting them together.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Gr H, Figs. 1, 3, and 4, are two metallic jaws, hinged together at A by means of a tenon in the jaw H entering a corresponding mortise in the jaw G; or the jaws may be hinged together by means of the ordinary pivot-hinge, or in any other convenient manner.
D D are the binders attached to the extremities of the arms G H, and are made to bind or grasp the straw securely between them by means of the screw B, which passes through a hole in one of the binders D, and thence through interstices in the broom-straw into a socket, B, which passes through a hole in the other binder, into which it is firmly screwed.
O is a shank, which is sharpened at its end for insertion into the handle of the broom. The shank 0 forms a part of the metallic jaw Gr.
F, Fig. 4, is a sack or bag, made of any flexible material, for covering the ends of the broom straw, and upon which the binders bear, and has two holes made in it for the passage of the screw and socket. The sack F is filled with broom-straw and placed between the metallic jaws, when the binders are connected by the screw-fastening described, thereby securely grasping the broom-straw.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The movable jaw H, furnished with a hinge, A, and a shank, O, in combination with the stationary jaw G, binders D D, and screw B, as described, and for the purposes set forth.
MOSES QUINBY. JOHN G. STURDEVANT.
