SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,830, dated July 14, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that FRANK L. PELLEY, deceased, late a citizen. of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Delaware and State of Iowa, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Shingling- Gages; and I, JERRY .P TILSON, administrator of the estate of said. decedent, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, aforesaid, do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to produce a cheap and simple shingling-gage adapted to be quickly and easily put in place or adjusted to any desired width of exposure of the shingle to the weather.
The invention consists in the construction combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a'sl1ingling-gage embodying my invention, the two ends only of the straight-edge being shown. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same through the center of one of the clamps. Fig. 3 is afragmentary view in perspective of the outer end of the upper part of one of the clamps.

A is a stirrup-shaped clamp, made of springsteel. One of its ends is brought to an edge, so as to slip easily under a course of shingles, as shown in Fig. 2. The other end, opposite thereto, is provided with spurs or tangs a a, as shown in Fig. 3, to penetrate the shingle lying between the two limbs of the clamp when in position for use. To the lower limb of the clamp is secured a stirrup B, the ends of which extend above the upper limb of the clamp, and are preferably inset somewhat, as shown in Fig. 1. Between these terminals of the stirrup is pivoted an eccentric cam-1ever C, adapted to press the two ends of the clamp together or upon the shingle lying between them, as will be readily seen.
To the upper limb of the clamp is secured a bolt D provided with a suitable thumb-nut E and washer F. Thisbolt passes through the slot G of a straight-edge II, and may be adjusted to any point along the length of the same. By means of transverse slots G G, any number of which may be formed in the straight-edge, lateral adjustment of the straight-edge on the clamps is obtained, so as to accommodate the to any desired width of exposure of the butt-end of the shingle.
In Fig. 2 the device is shown in position for use. The lower limb of the clamp is thrustup under the course of shingles I until their butts strike the stirrup B, the lever C being turned up in the meantime. The lever is then depressed, driving the tangs a a into one of the shingles and holding the gage firmly in place. The straight-edge may then be easily adjusted, if not already in proper position, and its upper edge forms an abutment for the next course of shingles to be laid, J.
The device is extremely simple in its construction and inexpensive to manufacture. It is of such a nature as to be very easily and quickly manipulated, and is convenient and efficient for the purposes for which it is de signed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is r In a shingling-gage, the combination of the stirrup-shaped clamp A of thin springsteel, one end sharpened and the other provided with tangs to penetrate the shingle between them, the stirrup B, the cam-lever 0, bolt D, thumb-nut E and washer F, and the straight-edge H having longitudinal slots G and transverse slots G G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
