UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE.
CHARLES HOLMAN, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
BUTTON FOR CUFFS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,768, dated July 14, 1896.
Application filed June 18, 1895.
To all whont nmy concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES IIOLMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons for Cuffs and the like, of which the following is aspeciiieation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to buttons or studs or other like devices for connecting the ends of cuffs or wristbands or for other similar purposes. Ordinarily buttons or studs of this character are of two different classes, thebuttons of one class being adapted for use with straight cuffs, which overlap at their ends when in use, and those of the otherclass being adapted for use with link cults, the ends of which do not overlap, but are usually separated somewhat while being worn.
The object of this invention is to produce a button of the general character referred to which can be used either with straight cuffs or with link cuffs, or for other analogous purposes, and shall be better adapted for such purposes than the buttons heretofore devised for like purposes.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and to which reference is to be had, Figure 1 is a central section of one embodiment of my invention, the parts being in position for use with straight cuffs. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same form, but with the parts in position for use with link euifs. Fig. i is a section on the line x of Fig. 2, the direction of sight being upward. Figs. i and 5 are central sections of still another form, the two views showing the parts in their different positions. Figs. 6 and 7 are similar views of a further modification.
As represented in the severalfigures of the drawings, the button comprises two parts or members, which for convenience may be designated as a head, as A, and as a foot, as B. As shown, the head and feet are of different sizes, but it will be understood that they may be related as to size as may be desired and may have any desired form or configuration. As will appear more clearly hereinafter, when reference is had to the several figures of the drawings, the two members of the button are connected by links which will permit the two Serial No. 553,195. (No model.)
members or parts to be separated somewhat widely, is usual in link buttons, and is capable of being collapsed or shortened, so that the two members maybe brought into closer proximity and may be there held substantially in the relation which exists between two members of a button for straight cuifs, provision being also made, as will hereinafter appear, for holding or retaining the two members in such proximity and relation in so far as they may require to be so held according to the particular construction of the two members and of the intermediate connection.
Referring now more particularly to the several concrete embodiments of the invention which are shown in the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that the head and feet are loosely connected by links or an equivalent device, and areso formed and attached to the links as to permit the head and foot to be connected together closely to form a button for straight cuffs and to be disconnected to form a link button by a rotation or partial rotation of one with respect to the other, the head and foot being screw-threaded or equivalen tly formed.
The head or upper member A of the button is made hollow, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2, as well as in Figs. i, 5, 6, and 7, and adapted to receive and conceal within it the loose or link connection which permits the limited separation of the two members and the free movement thereof. As shown in Figs. 1, :2, and 3, the two members are connected by two links, which are pivoted. togcthcr. The extremity of one link is pivoted to the head A, an d the extremity of the other link is likewise pivoted to the foot or member 13, but with a swivel-j oint, the link 0 for this purpose being pivoted to a rod or pin o which passes freely through the foot or member B and is provided with a head c to prevent its withdrawal therefrom. The under side a of the head A is slotted, as at a, to permit the links c and c to be introduced within the head, and is also provided with a boss to, which is formed for engagement with the shank of the foot or member B, the two parts being preferably screw-threaded for this purpose. The swivel-joint of the link c, with the foot or member B, permits the necessar Y rotation of the one part or member wi th referment thereof; as 'lOPlGSGJliBGCi in Fig Lin which position thetwomembers are held rigence tothe other in order toieffeot the engageidly together, the intermediate connection which; when the parts are in the position shown in Fig 2, permits the necessary free, 7 movement of the two members with respect to each other, being collapsed or extended as the case may be.
*A form differing but slightly from that just i 7 described is shownzin Figs. at and 5, inwhioh the head A is hollow, as before, While its under side (t is provided with a bossa for engage- :ment with the shank off the foot or member The links a and c are represented as ordinary open links, the link a engaging it ring: o which is ofsueh diameter es'to pie Vent its withdrawal through the aperture in r the boss a, While the link ei 'is represented as engagingizv headed pin or rode, which swivels in the foot 15. iiheswivel connection with the foot 1-3 is not essential, inasmuehas the free movement of the links and ring Within 7 the, head .A:Wili1)iflfliil the necessary rotation of the one member with respect to the other which is required to effect their engagement. I AllOfllGY$i111i1ttf0f111 is shown in Figs. (3 and 7, iii-which the'hollow head 01', member A and the foot 01- member B are shown as GOnnceted by 2t chain 0 which at oneend is secured to a swivel-pin e and at the otheiflend to some form oftake-up devieeivithin the head A,
