The nature of my invention consists in constructing bed-bottoms the cords ot' which may be tightened at pleasure, and at the same time elevate the cords in the center, so as to prevent sagging or a tendency to roll toward the center.

To enableI others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A represents the ordinary frame-work ot' an ordinary bedstead.

B represents rollers, which are secured in suitable bearings, as seen in Fig. l, at the head and foot of the bcdstead, and extend across the entire width of the same. These rollers are grooved their entire length on the back side for the purpose of admitting the knot on the ends of the cord which are to be inserted. (See Fig. 4.) In the center of this groove I make a mortise, a, through the roller long enoughto receive three cords of the ordinary size, and they are Wide enough to just admit one thickness of the cord. (See Figs. I and 4.) Said mortisea does not extend through the roller in horizontal lines, but diagonally, as seen in Figs. 4 and 6. Fig. 3 represents the manner in which they are arranged on the grooved or back side of the roller, and Fig.

v2 shows the relative position of the same on the opposite or in side.

C represents the center mortise, and C C represent the two outer mortises. The two others are graduated intermediate, as seen, Fig. 2. Thus it will be observed that all of the mortises pass through the slat diagonally, the center one passing upward and the outer ones downward.

C represents the cords, which are placed in the mortises c three abreast. They are drawn into position and are held there by means of the knot at their ends.

D represents a paw] and ratchet, or its equivalent, which is used for the purpose of securing the roller in place when the cords are tightened up. Said roller is provided with a hole, in which a rod may be inserted for the purpose of turning said rollers, and in that way straining the cords.

The peculiar arrangement of the mortises is for the purpose of elevating the cords in the center, so as to prevent the occupants from rolling in toward the center.

The advantages ot' the cords being placed abreast are, first, they thus form, in eiiect, a slat or its equivalent, thereby preventing them from cutting or bedding into the mattress, as a single cord would do, while at the same time the cord will yield much more readily and perfectly to the form ot' the occupant than slats will do, thus in et't'ect forming bed-bottoms which have all of the yielding qualities of a slat spring-bed which can be made for less than one-halt of their cost.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The rollers B, provided with mortises a, arranged in an ascending and descending series, as and for the purpose described, in combination with cords C and pawl and ratchet D, all
