J. A. THOMAS. SHUTTER WORKER AND FASTENER.
No. 561,925, Patented June 9, 1896.
WITNESSES INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT Trice.
JACOB A. THOMAS, OF READING, PENNSYL UiNlA.
SHUTTER WORKER AND FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,925, dated June 9, 1896.
Application filed November 16, 1895. Serial No. 569,207. (No model.)
To all? ZIJhOTIb it may concern;
Be it known that I, JACOB A. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter lVorkers and Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in shutter workers and fasteners; and it consists of the combination of a plate provided with a sliding-bolt housing and adapted to be attached to a shutter and a sliding bolt in said casing, and provided at one end with a rightangular portion adapted to be turned in against the shutter-casing when the shutter is open, and thus prevent the shutting of said shutter.
It also consists of certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the device embodying my invention applied to a shutter and with the bolt in its operative position for holding the shutter open, the position of the boltwhen closing the shutter being indicated by dotted outline. Fig. 2 represents an elevation of the inner side of the shutter when closed, showing the position the fasteningbolt occupies when the shutter is in this con dition; and Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of my improved shutter worker and fastener detached from the shutter.
A in the drawings represents the shutter, B the jamb or casing, and C my improved shutter worker and fastener.
The said worker and fastener comprises a plate 0, which is secured to the shutter by screws and is provided at one end with a hook portion 0, which is adapted to be passed about the inner edge of the shutter to assist in holding the plate in position and also as a guard to the edge of the shutter againstthe action of the bolt. Said plate a is also provided with a longitudinal bolt-housing 0 in which the bolt c is adapted to slide. The
belt is provided at its outer end with a lateral pin 0 which serves the double purpose of preventing the bolt from pulling out of its housing and as a stop to limit the rotary movement of the bolt in either direction, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The inner end of the bolt is bent at right angles to the bolt proper, and said bent portion is provided with a head When the shutter is opened, the bolt is slid forward until the pin c" engages the bolthousing, when the angular part of the bolt is freeto be swung into the position shown in Fig. 1, in which position it looks the shutter open, as any tendency of the shutter to close will only force the head more firmly against the casing or jainb l3.
\Vhen the shutter is to be closed, the angular, portion of the bolt is first turned out freeof the ja-mb and the bolt is then slid longitudinally in its housing until said angular port-ion contacts against the end of the housing. The angular portion is then used as a lever to close the shutter without inconvenience and with very little effort. When the shutter is closed, the angular portion of the bolt hangs downward, as shown in Fig. 2.
If desired, the shutter may also be secured in its closed position by providing the end of the angular portion of the bolt with a hook, which can he slipped over a suitable hook on the casing or jainb, said hook on the jamb being arranged in the same horizontal plane with the housing of the bolt, so that the angular portion of the bolt will be horizontal when engaged therewith.
By my invention the shutter can be held securely open, and at the same time improved means are provided whereby the shutter can be closed without reaehin g out and grasping its outer edge.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and dcsi re to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a shutter worker and fastener, thc combination of a plate provided with a slidingbolt housinga-nd adapted to be attached to a shutter, and a sliding bolt in. said casing and provided at one end with a rightangular portion adapted to be turned in against the shutter casing or janib when the shutter is open and thus prevent the shutting of said shutter substantially as described.
for limiting its movements both rotary and I0 longitudinal, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JACOB A. THOMAS. \Vitnessos:
II. M. HUNTER, W. Z. DECK.
