SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,874, dated June 9, 1896. Application filed October 30, 1895. Serial No. 567,350. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, GEORGE R. EAGER, of Newton, county of Middlesex, and JOSEPH A.

WHITE, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State oflviassachusetts, have invented an I1nprovement in Box-Covers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like let ters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention has for its object the production of means whereby boxes or similar vessels of small size originally used for transporting various articles may be utilized for some useful purpose after the contents have been removed.

Among other articles type-writer ribbons are now put up in small, preferably metallic, boxes, with a shallow cover which fits snugly upon the box, the ribbons being sold in such boxes singly or in bulk. hen the ribbon has been removed, the box is of little or no value and is thrown away. By this invention an auxiliary cover is provided, having mounted therein a soft cushion well adapted for holding pins and the like, making a useful office article, the box forming a convenient base therefor.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of a box provided with a top or cover having a pincushion, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof.

The box a is herein shown as rectangular in shape, having an open top and closed bottom a of the character in very general use for the transportation of type-writer ribbons, the ordinary cover (not shown) having a fiat top and downturned flange to fit snugly the sides of the box. An auxiliary cover is provided in accordance with this invention, consisting of a thin sheet-metal plate I), having a central opening and downturned flange Z), in so far, with the exception of the central opening, being precisely like the usual slipcover. A metallic cup or shell 0 (see Fig. 2) is provided with a lateral outwardly-turned flange c, and an adjacent annular head 0 is formed in the exterior of the shell just below the flange. This shell is sprung into the central opening of the cover 7) until the edge of the opening enters between the flange c and head 0 firmly securing the two parts together. A cushion (1-, made of suitable textile covering stuffed with fibrous or other suitable material (Z is secured to a circular base cl, of wood or other suitable material Said h cushion, having preferably a substantially semispherical upper end, is inserted in the shell 0 and held frictionally therein, though cement may be used, if desired. It will be obvious that the shape of the box and cover is immaterial, and that various articles may be originally placed in the box.

hile it is usual to send out one of the auxiliary cushion-covers with a number of the ordinary boxes, so that one may be utilized and the others discarded, each box may be provided with a cushion-cover, and, if desired, the cushion-cover could be used in the first instance by making the height of the box great enough to contain the original article sold therein. For purposes of packing, however, such construction is not advisable, as the projecting cushions would take up considerable space.

Having described our invention, what we desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent A sheetmetal cover having a retainingflange, a central opening, the cup-shaped receptacle c inserted in said opening and provided vwith the flange c and the bead 0 engaged with the opposite sides of the edge of the said central opening, and the pincushion inserted in said receptacle and extending above the flange thereof, the whole constituting an auxiliary or change cover for utilizing the bodies of otherwise waste boxes, substantially as described.
