FREDERICK S. RUDG'E, OF BROOKLYN, NEW' YORK.
TOASTER AND BROILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,728, dated June 9, 1896.
Application filed March 26, 1896.
To mit whom it may concern.-
lde it known that I, FREDERICK S. RUDGE, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toasters and Broilers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to toasters, meatbroilers, and similar articles; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation, and also comparatively inexpensive.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specilication, of which the accompanyin g drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved toaster or broiler, and Fig. 2 a side view thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide a handle A, to which are attached two springwire jaws B, each of which is composed of a strong spring-wire bent centrally to form a central oblong loop b, and the sides being directed outwardly from the handle A and curved backwardly to form an oblong loop b2, which incloses the central loop Z1, and the sides of the wire being then brought approximately together, as shown at b3, and being turned at right angles to the body portion of the loop b2, and being each provided adjacent to said loop with spring-rings b4, which are formed therein, and each side being then extended, as shown at b5, and connected with the handle A.
It will be observed that each of the jaws B are similarly formed, and that the parallel or projecting parts b5 form shanks, by means of which the jaws B are connected with the handle .A and connected with the corresponding spring rings or loops b". On each side are spring-yokes D, the ends of which are secured to said spring rings or loops b4, and said yokes are adapted to force the jaws B apart. I also connect with the parallel parts b", by which the inner oblong loop l) is connected with the j outer oblong loop Z22, a cross-rod Gr, said crossrod being composed of a wire, the central por- Serial No. 584,915. iNo model.)
tion of which is bent to forni two rings g,
which inelose said outwardly-directed parts i h6 of the central loop l), and the ends of the wire are then projected crosswise of the loop b2, and each end is provided with a depending arm g2, at the bottom of which is formed a ring f 3, which projects at right angles thereto, and the object of this construction is to provide means for supporting the jaws li above the fire or for allowing the same to rest thereon, it being understood that the cross.- head G may be turned so that the depending arms or legs g2 will rest parallel with the heads B. i
The body portion of the cross-rod Gr bctween the spring rings or loops g is carried upwardly above the heads B, as shown at gt, and this allows the cross-head G to freely turn. I also provide a clamp, which is mounted on the Shanks b5 of each head, and which coinprises a wire which is bent to form a ring or loop I-I, which incluses said shanks b5, and which is then bent at right angles thereto in the direction of the handle, and again folded and bent around said shanks, as shown at 7l., and then carried outwardly and backwardly parallel with the handle, as shown at h2; and the object of this construction is to provide means to clamp the jaws B together, which may be done by sliding the clamp in the direction thereof, the obj ect of this being to provide means for securely clamping the bread or meat between the jaws B; and in this operation the clamp H operates against the pressure of the spring-yokes D, and when said clamp is again folded backwardly in the direction of the handle said spring-yokes D will force the jaws apart and the bread or meat may be removed therefrom.
This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, while being also comparatively inexpensive, and it is evident that changes therein and modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirt of my invention; and,
I-Iaving fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A toaster or broiler, consisting of two similar jaws which are provided with projecting shanks, by which they are connected with IOO a handle, said Shanks being composed of spring-wire and being provided with Springyokes, adjacent to Said jaws, by which the jaws are forced apart, and said Shanks being also provided with a sliding clamp by which the jaws are forced together, substantially as shown and described.
2. A toaster or broiler, consisting of two similar jaws, which are provided with projecting Shanks by which they are connected with a handle, said 'Shanks being composed of Spring-wire, and being provided with springyokes, adjacent to said jaws, by which the jaws are forced apart, and said Shanks being also provided with a sliding clamp by which the jaws are forced together, and one of said jaws being provided with a cross-rod which is pivotally connected therewith, and which is provided at cach end with depending arms or legs which are adapted to support the jaws above the fire, substantially as Shown and described.
A toaster or broiler, consisting of two jaws, each of which is composed of strong spring-wire, the central portion of which is bent to form a central oblong loop, the sides of the wire being carried outwardly and bent around the central loop, and brought together to form a shank which is connected with a handle, each of said jaws and the Shanks thereof being similar in form, and the Shanks adjacent to the jaws being connected with Spring-yokes which are adapted to force them a'part, and Said Shanks being both provided with a sliding clamp which is adapted to force Said jaws together, substantially as Shown and described.
4. A toaster or broiler, consisting of two jaws, each of which is composed of Strong spring-wire, the central portion of which is bent to form a central, oblong loop, the Sides of the wire being carried outwardly and bent around the central loop, and brought together to form a shank, which is connected with a handle, each of said jaws, and the Shanks thereof being similar in form, and the shanks adjacent to the jaws being connected with spring-yokes which are adapted to force them apart, and said Shanks being both provided with a sliding clamp which is adapted to force said jaws together, and one of said jaws being provided with a cross-rod which is pivotally connected therewith, and provided at each end with depending arms or legs, sub- Stantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have Signed my name, in presence of the Subscribing witnesses, this 24th day of March, 1896.
FREDERICK S. RUDGE.
