FAN-HOLDER.

Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH WILI-IELM RICHARD POEKERT, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Fan-Holders, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to fan-holders for use in connection with chairs, sofas, or other articles of furniture; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class by means of which a fan may be connected with a chair or other article of furniture and adjusted to any' desired position, said holder being also provided with means by which the fan may be operated.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a chair provided with my improved fan-holder; Fig. 2, a similar View, on an enlarged scale, of the operative parts of the device, the position thereof being reversed; and Fig. 3, aplan view of the construction shown in Fig. 2. p

In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in Fig. 1 I have shown at 5 a chair which is provided with a back, to one side 6 of which is secured a spring-clamp 7.

The clamp 7 is composed of a piece of spring metal folded centrally to form separate sides 8, which are provided at their free ends with semicircular jaws 9, and a screw or bolt 10 is passed through the separate sides 8 of the clamp and provided with a set-nut 11, and secured to the closed end or loop 12 of the clamp is a tube 13, the upper end-of which is provided with serrations or teeth 14, and mounted in the tube 13 is a tubular head 15, which is provided with a pin 16, which is adapted to rest in the notches or recesses formed by the serrations or teeth 14, and by means of this construction the tubular head 15 may be turned or adjusted to any desired position.

Secured in the tubular head 15 is a rod 17, which is curved outwardly to form an arm 18,

which is provided with an upwardly-directed extension 19, on which is mounted a sleeve 20, whichis held in place thereon by a setscrew 22, and the sleeve is provided at its outer side with an outwardly and upwardly directed arm 23 and a corresponding outwardly and downwardly directed arm 24, and said sleeve is also provided between the inner ends of said arms with a shoulder or projection 25, to which is secured a spring 26, which is connected with a bar 27, which is provided with an oblong slot 28, through which passes an outwardly-curved or segmental rod 29, which is secured to the ends of the

23 and 24, and on the upper portion of said rod 29 is a contractile spring 30, one end of which is secured to the arm 23 at 31 and the other to the bar 27 at 32.

The outer end of the bar 27 is secured in the head 33 of a fan-holder 34:, and said fanholder is cut out longitudinally of its upper side to form a groove 35, and the holder is also provided with rings or bands 36, and in practice the handle 37 of the fan 38 is passed into the groove of the holder 34: and is held therein by the rings or bands 36.

The fan 37 may be of any desired shape, form, or construction, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the 1 accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.

It will be apparent that the arm 18 may be adjusted laterally, as desired, by the occupant of the chair, and the fan 38 may also be held at any desired angle by turning the handle thereof in the rings or bands 36, and by pulling downwardly on the fan-holder and allowing the same to be retracted by the spring 30 a constant motion may be given to the fan.

The downward movement of the fan-holder may be produced by any desired means,either by hand or by a cord or string secured thereto, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the'spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A fan-holder, comprising a clamp which is adapted to be secured to a chair or other article of furniture, a tube secured therein, a rod or arm mounted in said tube and laterally adjustable therein, said rod or arm being provided with an upwardly-directed eX- tension, a sleeve connected with said extension, and provided with outwardly and upwardly, and outwardly and downwardly directed arms, the outer ends of which are connected with a curved or segmental rod, a spring connected with said sleeve, centrally of said arms, and the outer end of which is connected with a bar through which said curved orsegmental rod passes,a spi ral spring mounted on the upper portion of said curved or segmental rod, and one end of which is 0011- nected with said outwardly and upwardly directed arm, and the other end with said bar, and a fan-holder connected with the outer end of said bar, substantially as shown and described.

A fan-holder comprising a clamp which is adapted to be connected with a chair or other article of furniture, a tube secured in said clamp and provided with serrations or teeth at its upper end,a tubular head mounted in said tube, and provided with a projecting pin, and with a rod or arm which is secured therein, a sleeve connected with said rod or arm, outwardly and upwardly and outwardly and downwardly directed arms connected with said sleeves, a curved or segmental rod by which the outer ends of said arms are connected, a spring connected wit-l1 said sleeve between said arms, a bar connected with the outer end of said sleeve and provided with a slot or opening through which said curved or segmental rod passes, a spring mounted on the upper end of said curved or segmental rod, and one end of which is connected with said bar, and the other with the outwardly and upwardly directed arm, and a fan-holder connected with the outer end of said bar, substantially as shown and described.

3. A fan-holder consisting of means for securing a fan to a chair or other article of fur niture, a rod or arm adjustably connected therewith,outwardly-directed arms connected with said rod or arm, a curved or segmental rod by which the outer ends of said arms are connected, a spring also secured to said rod or arm the outer end of which is connected with a bar through which said curved or segmental rod passes, a fan-holder connected with said bar, and a spiral spring mounted on said curved or segmental rod, and the 0pposite ends of which are connected one with said bar and the other with one of the arms with which the curved or segmental rod is connected, substantially as shown and described.
