IMPROVED FANNING-ATTAGHMBNT FOR ROCKIliltr-(HAIRS'l ltetliehule maar tu in these Eaters rtent mit mating wat nf tige same.
TO ALL WHOM ,IT MAY CONGERN:
De it known that I, AUGUSTUS R. HOBBS, of Elizabeth, in the county of Union, and State offNew Jersey, have invented a new and improved Farining-Attachment to Rockinghairs; and I do. hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the Aart to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
This invention relates `to a new and improved attachment to Irocking-chairs, whereby a rotating motion is. communicated by the rocking ofthe chair to fans so situated asto cool l,and refreshthe `occupant of the same.
It consists in the construction, combination,'a'nd arrangement ofthe parts as hereinafter more fully set forth. In the accompanyingplate of drawings- Figure 1 is aside view of V'my invention, struction.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional'view of the fan-shaft and pinion, the same is held upon ,the tube. l
Similar letters of referoncedndicate corresponding parts, taken in the line x x, fig. 1;
Within the bore of any nietallic tube, A, is fitted a metallic rod, B said rod B being provided with a portionofthc casing or tube being removed, to show the contogether with the clamp, by means of which grooves upon the upper end of the same," for about one-third of the leugth`of the rod B, so as to form a cylindrical rack, as shown, said rod being of suiiicent length to extend from the oor to about fifteen inches above the arm of the rocking-chair to which the same is to be attached.
The tube A mustbe ofsuicient length to permit of a reciprocating movement of th'e rod B within the same, and may be of any convenient diameter, or'of such diameter as to`be ot` about one-half or ive-eighth-s of one inch in the bore, and may beclosed at the top, and finished or ornamented according to the taste.
v Within a bent metallic clasp, C,`and rotatingr infbearings in the two parts of the same, as shown in the drawing, is a metallic shaft, D. Keyed upon thesh'aft D,`in the ordinary way, is a spur-geared pinion, E, having teeth so formed as to tit into the grooves in the rod B, through the two parts of the clasp C,near one end of the same, and working'in a screw-thread inonc part thereof is a set-screw, F.
The clasp C is so formed as to receive the tube A between the two parts-thereof, as shown in the drawing, the object of the screw Fbeing to hind the two parts of the clasp C irmly upon said tube A, and so that the tube A will support the shaft D, and the` fans upon the same. lhe clamp e may be supported by suitable braces attached to the'tubeA, or in any other convenient manner.
Through the tube A'i's cut a slot. to receive the teeth of the pinion E, as shown. Around the rod B, the lower end resting upon arc'ollar, H, as shown, is a coiled spiral spring, I,4 attached by the upper end to the tube A, as shown, so that when the rod'. B is forced upinto the tube A, the shaft D will be rotated in one direction by rack upon the rod B working in the teeth of the pinion E, and will be rotated in the opposite direction when left free, by the force of the spring I. The bottom end of the rod B rests upon the oor,and is furnished with a wheel, J, serving as a pivot onwhich the rod A vibrates in the motion of the chair. The tubeA maybe made in two parts, jointed by a collar K,r by meansof which the upper part of thc tube A may be turned upon-the lower part of the same, by means of which the fans G may bc adjusted. The fans G may be any ofthe palmeleaf or other fans now commonly in use. y
Upon the shaft D, at any convenient point, is a collar, L, said collar L being furnished with three or more arms, to each of which afan, G, may be -attached, said collar-L being held upon the shaft D by a set-screw, asl shown.
The whole may be secured to` the arm. and roel; any convenient position or method. 4
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The groovcd rod B, in combination with the shaft D described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The tube A and grooved rod B, or its equivalent, and spring I, by means of which a reciprocating er of any rocking-chair, M, as shown in the drawing, or in and any fans G, substantially as shown and rectilinear motion of the rod B liss changed to u. reciprocating rotarymotion of the shaft D, :md any fons; G, in
combination with any rockingchair, M, substantially as shown and described.
3. The device for holding the Shaft D improper position Witli respect to the rod B, substantially :1s shown :md described. 4. The collar K, in combination with the tube A, made in two parts, for adjusting the position of the fans G, substantially as shown and described.
5. A {Fanning-attachment to rocking-chairs, subst/an tially as shownzmd described. `n\- T helove specification of my invention signed by me, this 27th day of December, 18671 AUGUSTUS R. HOBBS. Witnesses:
WM.' F. McNAMARA, ALEX. F. ROBERTS.
