DRESS-SHIELD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,067, dated May 26, 1896.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. SUTTON, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dress- Shields, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to what are commonly known as dress-shields, consisting of a waterproof material for incorporation into those portions of dresses which come under the armpits. The object is to provide such a shield which will not only be self-ventilating, but will serve to ventilate the clothing; and to this end my invention consists in a shield which is corrugated in such form as to constitute a series of channels which will be alternately collapsed and dilated by the movements of the wearer in such manner as to produce an active circulation of air through them.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view of a shield constructed according to my invention, one corner of the shield being represented as turned over to show the corrugations in the inner faces of the two leaves of the shield. Fig. 2 is a view of the lower edge of the same.

The shield may be of the shape generally adopted for such shields, and may be made of soft india-rubber, vulcanized or properly cured, or of any suitablefabric which is pliable or flexible in all directions and coated with rubber to render it proof against perspiration. The corrugations a, which constitute the distinguishing feature of my invention, might run in various directions, but I prefer generally that they should run upward and downward, as shown in Fig. 1, as running in that direction they will provide efficiently for the circulation of air over the inner and outer surfaces of the shield in such manner as to afford perfect ventilation to the adjacent portions of the dress.

In a dress provided with such a corrugated shield the slightest movement of the arms and even slight movements of the body cannot fail, by the variation in the pressure on different parts of the shield, to produce repeated collapsion and dilation of some or others of the air-channels a. In being thus collapsed the channels will have the air expelled from them, and in the dilation of said channels, consequent upon the relaxation of pressure, air will be again drawn into them. In this way the circulation of air over the shield and within the surrounding portions of the dress will be unfailable.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A dress-shield of pliable and flexible material corrugated to form in connection with the dress and body of the wearer when in use a series of collapsible and dilatable tubular channels, substantially as herein described.
