Description

J. KAPPBLHOPF.
Muff.`
No. 209,271. Patented Oct. 22,1878.
ILFETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGMFHER, WASHINGTON. D. C4
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE..
JOHN H. KAPPELHOFF, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MUFFS.
Specification forming part of Letters Pat-ent N0. 209,271, dated October 22,1878; application led June 27, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. KAPPEL- HOFF, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mufl's, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing, in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal section of my muft in the plane x m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof. i
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish a muti' which possesses the required degree of warmth, andwhich is lighter, besides being less expensive, than those now generally in use.
It consists in a muii constructed of an annular closed bag or vessel of-vuleanized indiarubber or other inflatable material, having an aperture for the admission of air, so that the bag can be lled with air, and thereby brought to the proper shape. I connect the inner and outer parts of the bag or vessel composing my mud by radial bands, whereby a symmetrical appearance or shape is given to the article when it is inflated. Y
In the drawing, the letter A designates a bag or vessel shaped according to my invention to form a muii, the same having an annular shape and being closed at its ends. Iprefer to make this bag of vulcanized india-rubber; but it can also be made of animal-skins, or of any other material capable of being inliated. B is an aperture, by which air is admitted to the bag; and O are radial bands, by which the inner and outer parts of the bag are connected together. These bands are made of any suitable non-elastic material, and are arranged in rows, as shown in Fig. l.
In carrying out my invention I take a straigbt. bag of proper length and width and fasten the bands O therein in the proper positions 5 then bend this bag and unite the two ends thereof, so as to give the same the desired annular shape. If the bag is of indiarubber, the bands O are caused to adhere thereto, and the ends of the bag are united by the vulcanization of the rubber.
Vhen the bag A is to be used air is forced into the same in any suitable manner through the aperture B, and when the bag has .been iniiated to the desired extent the aperture is closed by a suitable stopper.
If desired, the bag may be covered with fur or other desirable material, and iinished in the usual way of finishing a muff.
It will be readily understood that by iilling the bag composing my muff with air the same is rendered exceedingly warm,whi1e the weight thereof is reduced to a minimum, and the least expense is incurred in its production; and since the bands O have a tendency to hold the inner and outer parts or walls of the bag parallel to each other the same is brought to and held in symmetrical shape.
1 am aware that it is not new to so construct a muff that it may be inflated with air through an opening in the same, and suoli, broadly, l hereby disclaim.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A muft' consisting of a bag having its two side edges brought together and united, to
impart an annular shape thereto and form an inner and outer casing to create an interveir ing space, said bag-bein g constructed with an opening adapted to be closed by a stopper, whereby the bag may be inated, all coustructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described. 4
2. A mutt' composed of an annular closed bag or vessel of india rubber or other inflatable material, having an aperture for the admission ot air, and having radial bauds to connect its inner aud outer parts and preserve the shape thereof, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 21st day of June, 1877.
