T. P. MURRAY. BURGLAR ALARM.
No. 561,019. Patented Mayz, 1896.
WJTNESSES.. INVENTOR,
I BY M.
ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES ATEN'r rricu.
THOMAS P. MURRAY, or sAL'r LAKE cirY, UTAH.
BURG LAR-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,019, dated May 26, 1896. Application filed April 8, 1896l Serial No. 586,628. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. MURRAY, a
I citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Burglar-Alarm, of which the following is a speciiication.
The object of this invention is to construct a burglar-alarm, as will hereinafter appear.
Figure l is a vertical section in part and part in upright elevation. Fig. 2 is a crosssection through line a: of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through line 7 7 of Fig. l with the plug removed. Fig. 4 shows alarm in position for use on a door. Fig. 5 is a plan of the push-bar used. Fig. G shows the alarm in position for use on a window.
In the different figures similar letters refer to similar parts.
D is the body of the alarm, made of metal, the upper part of which is provided with elongated openings P P,im mediately opposite each other, which lead into the hollow central part of the alarm, the body being hollow up to the upper ends of the openings P P.
Gis apin placed in the side and extending inwardly a short distance.
F is a plug provided with a iiring-pin M at its upper end, annular ring L, and annular recess K just below ring L, the lower end having the headA H, larger than the body, terminating with the concave end Y, surrounded with the toothed flange I. The annular ring Lis provided with the recess S, Fig. 2, through which the stop-pin G passes.
E is an explosive cartridge placed within the alarm, as Ashown in Fig. l.
A is a bracket, with a ring at one end and bayonet form or offset shoulder at the other. The bayonet part usually is somewhat l'lattened. l
B is a chain, of sufficient length, by which the alarm is attached to the bracket A.
In use the bayonet end of the bracket A is shoved between the door Z and the cross-bar A above the door. As the door is opened the bracket is shoved out beyond the bar A, when the alarm falls to the floor, striking the floor with the end H, driving the firing-pin M suddenly against the cartridge E, which explodes with a loud report, alarming the inmates of the house.
As shown in Fig. G, the alarm is attached to a window. The pin U is driven into the upper bar of the lower sash B. One end of the push T is fastened to the side bar of the upper sash C. The lower end, being scalloped, as shown at YV, Fig. 5, rests on the pin U bctween the suspending-chain and sash B'. As the sash B is raised the push-pin is -forced along on the pin U and forces the suspending-chain off the nd of the pin, when the alarm drops to the window-sill, giving a loud report, as before described. The lower end of the plug J is provided with a toothed annular iange to prevent slipping, so as to insure the sudden upward movement of the plug in case the alarm should strike thefloor in au oblique position. The lower end is also made concave, so as to give greater projection to the teeth I.
vIt will be observed that the lower end of the plunger is larger than the upper end. makes the lower end of the alarm heavier than the upper and in the act of falling causes the alarm to strike on this end.
The shoulder O is a rest for the iiange of the cartridge to strike against, and the hollow space in theinterior of the alarm when the cartridge is placed is made just the size of the cartridge. Vhen the plug is placed in position, the pin G passes through the recess S and is then turned to one side and is held in position.
I claiml. As an article of manufacture, a burglar- "\alar1n consisting of a hollow metallic case,
near its upper end provided with side openings, an angular shoulder in the interior, a stop-pin, a cartridge, a plug having a iiringpin at its upper end, concaved at its lower end, and provided with teeth, and made heavier at the lower end, all constructed substantially as shown.
2. As an article of manufacture, a burglaralarmconsisting of a hollow metallic case, near its upper end provided with side openings, an angular shoulder in the interior, a stop-pin, a cartridge, a plug having a firingpin at its upper end, concaved at its lower end and provided with teeth and made heavier at its lower end, and means for suspending the device substantially as shown and described.
