UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORTON ALLAOE GEARY, OF LOOK HAVEN, ASSIGNOR OF'ONEHALF TO JOHN D. BROVX, OF SNOV SHOE, PENNSYLVANIA.
WATCH KEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,875, dated April 13, 1886.
Application tiled November 6, 19H5. Sei-inl No. 181,050. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, Monroe: WALLACEy GEARY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lock Haven, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lVatch-Keys, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
[C My invention relates to watchkeys, the object being to provide a device of this character whereby a watch may be wound without removing the hand from the key or the key from the key-post of the watch, and to provide a key which will fit posts of diiiereut sizes and will be thoroughly dust-prooi'.
With these ends in view theinventiou consists in the combination, with an outer casing or tube having a series of ratchet-teeth at its lower end, of an interior casing carrying mechanism, and a collar rigidly connected with the interior tube, and having a series of ratchet-teeth to engage the teeth on the outer casing.
The invention `further consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a watch-key constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, and Figs. 8, 4, and 5 are detail views of parts detached.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents au outer tube or casing, which is l'ormed at its lower end with a series of ratchetteeth, (t.
B represents an inner tube or casing, which 4o is itted in tube or casing A so as to turn loosely therein, and is rigidly connected with a collar, O, which is fitted on the lower end thereof below casing A, said collar having a series of ratchet-teeth, b, upon its upper end,
5 which are adapted to engage with the teeth a. The collar O is fitted upon the tube or casing B, and held by a transverse pin or rivet, c. Vithin the inner casing, O, are arranged the clamping-jaws D, which are convex on their 5o inner faces, so that when they are lowered they will be spread apart by the pin or rivet c, which tits between said jaws. The outer sides of said jaws are concave, so that they may be spread or opened to their fullest extent without coming in contact with the inner casing.
Upon the inner side of the outer casing, near the upper end thereof, is provided a seat, d, which supports a circular metallic plate, e, having a central hole or opening.
E represents apush-bar, which is formed at 6o its lower end with spring-arms F, having hooked ends f, which are adapted to engage the upper ends of the clamping -jaws, which are provided with notches g, to receive said hooked ends. The push-bar E extends through the hole or opening in the plate e, and its up per end is secured in a cap, G, by means of a pin or rivet, lt. The said cap G tits within the outer casing, and may be formed with an eye or loop, j, by which it may be suspended 7o from a watch-chain.
'Upon the bar E is a spiral spring, t', which bears against the under side of the cap G at one end aud against the upper side of the plate e at its other eud. It will thus be seen that when the cap G is depressed the clamping-jaws will be spread to receive the keypost. I have provided an elongated slot, 7c, in the pusli-bar, and fitting in the same is a pin, l, which is secured at its ends in the up- 8c per end of the interior casing. It will thus be seen that the vertical movement of the said push-bar is limited.
I represents a spiral spring which incloses the inner casing and bears against outwardly- 8 5 extending nibs on the upper end of the same at one end, and against an interior shoulder on the interior ot' the outer casing at its other end. By this arrangement the outer casing is held in engagement with the teeth 0f the col- 9o lar on the lower end of the inner casing.
By the construction of key before described it will be observed that the same may be ad justed upon the key -post of any watch, and
that the watch may be wound without removing the key from the post or the hand from the key.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. In a watch-key, the combination, with an xoo outer casing, of an inner casing. carrying a colletr7 said collar and outer casing having engauging ratchet-teeth and clamping-jaws for engaging the key-post, as set forth.
2. In a. watch-key, the combination, withan outer easing, of an inner easing carrying acollar, said 'collar and outer easing having engaging ratchet-teeth, a. spring inelosing the upper end of the inner easing and bearing at its upper end against 'nibs projecting from said casing7` and at its lower end against an interior shoulder' on the outer easing, as set forth.
3. The combination, with an outer casing, of an inner'oasing carrying a collar, said 6011er and outer easing having engaging rateh et-teeth, clamping-jaws in the inner easing, a pin fitting between the same, a springactuetted pushbar having spring-arms to engage the'notched upper ends ofthe clamping-arms, `and a spring 2o Y' for holding the outer casing in engagement with the collar on the lower end of the inner casing, as set forth. I
4. In a. watch-key, the combination, with vau` j presence of two Witnesses. n

Witnesses: B. F. GEARY, J oHN T. ZIMMERMAN.
