UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,

MERCHANTS douPoN-BooK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,535, dated May 19, 189
Application filed February 10, 1396. Serial No. 578,704. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES T. PLANT, of Monticello, W'right county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Merchants Coupon-Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to coupon-books, and the object which I have in view is to provide a merchants coupon-book provided with a series of coupons of different denomination to be presented and torn off by the storekeeper or clerk when a sale is made, said book being also provided with a slip upon which the date of the sale or removal of the coupon is noted, thereby forming a check for the convenience of the customer, and a further object is to provide a coupon-book of such construction that it will not be possible to use the book a second time or after the original coupons have been removed Without detection.
My invention consists generally in providing a cover or case having pockets in each side to receive coupon-bearing cards adapted to iit therein, each card being provided with a series of coupons of different denominations arranged in groups and said case or cover being provided with one or more holes ar ranged to register with similar holes in the coupon-bearing cards and coupons, thereby forming continuous openings extending entirely through the book when the cards are placed in their proper position within the pockets, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective of a coupon-book embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the coupon-bearing cards drawn out. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 00 :r of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 2 represents the cover or case of the book, which may be made of any suitable material, preferably heavy paper, and having its ends bent in opposite directions over the middle portion, thereby forming the pockets 3 and 4, in which are placed the coupon-bearing cards 5 and 6. The edges of thecover are held together by a binding of any suitable material, forming a rectangular-shaped case or receptacle, and open at the ends. The cover or case is provided with the holes or openings 7 and 8, which extend entirely through the same. The cover is also provided upon one face with the numeral representing the value of the book and also with blanks in which the number of the cover may be inserted and also the name of the owner and the person or firm by whom it is to be redeemed. Upon the end of the cover and upon either side is printed or stamped the value of each coupon upon the adjacent side of the coupon bearing card within the pocket. Each card is provided upon either side with a series of coupons of different denomination, the leaves of coupons of the same denomination being arranged in groups and each leaf being provided at one side of the card with a strip forming stubs for each coupon, each stub bearing a number corresponding to the numeral stamped on the opposite coupon and being provided with a blank space within which may be marked the date of the removal of the opposite coupon. Each card is provided with the holes 9 and 10 and 11 and 12, which extend through the overlying coupons and which register with the holes or openings 7 and 8 in the cover, thereby forming continuous holes, which extend entirely through the book. These holes may be placed at intervals in the cover of the book and there may be any number of them that may be desired. As the openings in the cover and cards will not register unless the proper card is placed in the proper pocket, the clerk or storekeeper can instantly tell at a glance whether the book has been tampered with or not.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A merchants coupon-book, comprising a case or cover provided with one or more pockets, coupon-bearing cards to be carried in said pockets, each card being provided with leaves of coupons of different denomination arranged in groups, said case or cover being provided with holes or openings extending entirely through the same, and said cards and the leaves of coupons being provided with similar openings arranged when the cards are entirely within the pockets to register with the holes in said cover, thereby forming continuous openings or holes through the book, for the purpose set forth.
2. A merchants coupon-book, comprising a case or cover, having pockets in each end formed by bending the ends of the material composing the cover in opposite directions, said coverbeing provided with holes or openings extending entirely through the same, cards for said pockets, each card being provided with leaves of coupons arranged in groups of the same denomination each group of leaves being provided at one side with a strip to be permanently attached to the card and forming stubs bearing numbers corre- JAMES 'l.
