UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES I3. BROOKS, OF NEIVARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- TIIIRDS TO PLUMMER S. PAGE AND GEORGE M. HALSTEAD, OF
SORANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
DUST-PROOF BAG FOR STREET-SWEEPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,154, dated May 12, 1896.
Application filed February 15, 1896. Serial No. 579,430. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES l3. BROOKS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Proof Bags for Street- Sweepers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide a dust-proof bag especially applicable for use on the hopper of street-sweepers such as are illustrated in the application, Serial No. 572,438, filed December 17, 1895.
The invention consists in the improved bag, in its connection with the hopper of a streetsweeper, and in the combination and arrangement of the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the street-sweeper above referred to provided with my improved bag, and Fig. 2 an enlarged detail view of the bag and of a portion of the hopper, to clearly illustrate the manner in which it is used.
In said drawings, a is the truck of the sweeper, I) the depending platform, and c the fulcrumed elevator-casing, the latter being provided at its upper end with a downwardlyextending hopper d, having the flange 2 and the damper on, all as clearly shown.
The bag 6 is provided at or near its upper end with a string or leather strap f, preferably interlaced, so that the said bag can be closed when desired. To the mouth of the bag is secured, by stitching or in any desired manner, an extension-sleeve g, made out of canvas or any other suitable material, and is provided at or near its upper end with an elastic band h, adapted to engage and bind against the circumference of the hopper d. When the bag 6 is filled to about the strap f, the damper m is closed, the bag is tightened up by means of the said strap f, and the extension-sleeve with its elastic band It withdrawn from the hopper. By this arrangement it is impossible for any dust or dirt to fly around while the bag is being closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A bag provided at or near its upper end with a ti ghteningstrap, and at its mouth with an exten sion-sleeve having at or near its free end an annular elastic band, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination with the downwardlyextending hopper, of a street-sweeper, of a bag, a tightening-strap at or near the upper end of said bag, an extension-sleeve secured at the mouth of the bag, and an annular elastic band arranged at or near the free end of the bag and adapted to engage the hopper, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of January, 1896.
CHARLES B. BROOKS.
