Be it known that I, XVIL LIAM HENRY Tow- ERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shady Grove, in the county of Crittenden and State of Kentucky, have invented an Improvement in Leather Back-Band Loops with Tongue through Link of Chain, of which the 'following is a specification.

This invention has relation to that class of back-band loops or trace-carriers which are formed from leather and which are supplied with a flexible tongue to engage with a link of the trace-chain. Heretofore the fiexible tongue has been a separate part of the loop, thereby adding materially to the cost of the deyice both in the provision of the tongue and the means required for attaching the tongue to tle loop or back-band.

'The purpose of this invention is to reduce the number of parts, lessen the cost of production, and thereby cheapen and simplify the article and enable it to be placed upon the market at a small cost Compared with similar devices Theinvention consists,essentially, of a loop formed from a single blank of leather and having a portion cut therefron, so as to form the tongue, the latter being an integral part of the blank, tl'erebyobviating the use of fastenings for attaching it thereto.

The improvement further consists of the novel conibination of the loop with the backband,whereby apocket is formed between the outer portion of the loop and the back-band, into which the loose end portion of the tongue is forced and held therein by friction after being engaged with the trace.

For a full Understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.

The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of Construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown 'in the accompanyin g drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detail View of the blank from which the loop is forned, the tongue being slightly elevated at its free end. Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing the invention applied. Fig. 3 is a Vertical central section thereof. Fig. 4: is a detail View of the loop.

The same reference-numerals denote corresponding and like parts in all the figures of the drawings, and in the latter l indicates the back-band, of leather,webbing, or like material, usually employed for this purpose; 2, the trace-chain, and 3 the loop, of leather or similar stout material.

The loop is formed of a blank of proper length and width and which is folded about inidway of its ends to form the inner part i and the outer part 5, which parts are Secured together by rivets or in any approved inanner and are Secured to the back-band 1. The tongue 6 is formed by cutting parallel slits in the blank from a point a little to one side of the middle thereof and terminating a short distance from one end of the blank, the said slits converging near the end of the blank to separate the tongue from the body of the blank, as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 4:. The space formed in the part 4: by cutting the tongue therefrom constitutes the pocket 7, into which the loose end portion of the tongue G is thrust after being engaged with a link of the trace 2, so as to be out of the way. It will be seen that the trace passes through the bight provided by folding the blank upon itself. Hence there is no downward strain or pressure upon the tongue 6, tending to withdraw it from the pocket 7, the strain upon the tongue being in a direction corresponding to the length of the trace and which is compensated for by the edges of the tongue engaging with the edges of the pocket, as will be readily understood.

By constructing the loop substantially in the manner herein set forth a simple and effective device is produced and projecting parts are obviated, which are asource of annoyance and frequently work injury to the harness and are a source of constant expense, since such projecting parts are wrenched or torn ofi when the harness is in use.
