No. 559,447. Patented May 5, 1896.
2258853." i y y M y NrTED STATESN JULIUS FRANKEL, OF NE`W YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO RICHARD A. CHAPMAN AND THOMAS LTURNER, OF
SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,447, dated May 5, 1896. Application fled December 18, 1895. Serial No. 572,591. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUs FRANKEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers for Coats and other Garments, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming IO a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to hangers for coats, cloaks, and similar articles; and the object thereof is to .provide a chain for this purpose which is novel in construction and the separate links of which are adapted to have placed thereon a letter or letters in such manner that the name of the owner of the coat, cloak, or other article may be placed on said chain;
2o and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the chain constructed as hereinafter described.
The invention is'fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a top plan view of a blank from which one link of my improved` chain is formed; Fig. 2, a similar view of one form of end link which I employ; Fig. 3, a view of the chain complete; and Fig. 4L shows an edge view of one of the links folded.
In the practice of my invention I provide a link which is preferably stamped from a sheet of metal and which is provided with a body portion A, which is adapted to have formed thereon in any desired manner a letter, the letter L being formed on the link shown in Fig. 1, and at one end of the body portion is a projection o, in which is formed an oblong opening a2, and at the other side of the body portion is a shank a3, one side of which is curved outwardly and the other inwardly, as shown at a4 and a5, respectively,and formed on or secured to the end thereof is a head a, in which is an oblong opening a7, the
head a6 and the opening a7 thereon being similar to the projection a and the opening a2 therein at the opposite side of the central portion or head A of the link. I also provide an end 5o link, one form of which is shown in Fig. 2,
and which comprises an oblong link B, having an oblong` opening b and provided with eyelets b2 at each end, by which it may be secured to a garment, and I may also provide a shank b3, which is secured to or formed on one side thereof, at the end of which is another eyelet b4, and the process of forming a chain from these links is substantially as follows: In connecting the iirst link of the chain with the end link B the shank CL3 is inserted through the oblong opening b therein and then bent inwardly and backwardly, asl shown in Fig. 4, in which position the oblong opening a? in the head as will register with the opening a2 in the projection a. In connecting the next link the shank a3 is inserted through the openings o? and a7 and bent inwardly and backwardly in the same manner as in the case of the first link, and each link of the chain is connected therewith in the same manner, and any desired number of links may, as will be understood, be employed, and when the chain has reached the desired length the projection a of the last link is provided with a link D, which may be connected therewith in any desired manner, and in the end of which is formed an eye or opening CZ, or any other preferred. form of end link may be employed.
It will beunderstood that the letters requisite to spell the name of the owner of the garment must be placed on the body portions A of the separate links, as shown in Fig 3, and it will thus be seen that I provide a perfectly safe and secure hanger for' coats and other garments and one which may also be employed to designate the owner of the garment. i
My invention is not limited to the exact form of the links of the chain or to the method of connecting the same, or to the form of the end links, or to the means employed for connecting the same with the garment, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations in and modifications of the construction herein described as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a coat-hanger consisting of a chain constructed IOO of a series of connected links, each link consisting of a body portion having a flat top adapted to receive a letter, a head or proj ection on one end or side of the body portion and having an oblong opening formed trans versely in it, and a shank on the opposite end or side of the body portion, provided With a head having an oblong opening formed transversely in it, each link being centrally folded so that the end openings register with each other; each link being formed so that the transverse oenteris at the point of junction of the shank and body portion, and end links secured to each end of the chain having an oblong opening and apertured end lugs and provided With a shank projecting from the free side thereof, at right angles thereto in the end of Which is formed an opening, whereby the device is attached, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention l have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 13th day of December, 1895.
JULIUS FRANKEL. lVitnesses C. GERs'r, S. L. IIAWKsHURs'r.
