Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES D. ARMSTRONG, OF BAYARD, IOWA.
DlSK-SHARPEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,922, dated April 28, 1896.
Application filed December 30, 1895. Serial No. 573,822. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES D. ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayard, in the county of Guthrie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk-Sharpeners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in disk-sharpeners, and
especially to a simple construction of tool adapted to hold a cutting-blade on a standard and means for forcing the cutting edge against the beveled edge of the disk as the latter is caused to revolve on a shaft.
The invention relates, further, to apeculiar construction of standard, which is adapted to rest on the ground, and carrying an adjustable cutting-blade held at an angle, and of a lever pivoted to the said standard,- which lever carries a friction-wheel provided to hold a disk interposed between the standard and lever in contact with the cutting edge. By my improved sharpening device I am enabled to easily apply the same inthe field or wherever convenient, and can regulate the working of the tool to cut any angle of bevel on the disk.
To these ends, and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my disksharpener. Fig. 2 is an edge view showing the broad side of the disk held bythe sharpening-tool.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the standard of the tool, the lower end of which has downwardly-projecting points a tohold thestandard from slipping. Located at any suitable position on the standard, preferably above the middle of the same, is the cuttingblade B, set at an angle in an aperture 1) of the said standard and held in placeby the wedge-shaped member D.
Pivoted to the standard at c is the leverE, which carries a friction-wheel F, journaled on a projection f thereon.
G is a disk, mounted on a shaft K, and is adapted to be revolved by any convenient means.
In operation the disk is held between the friction-wheel and the cutting-blade-that is, the beveled edge of the disk-and caused to revolve, and the operator, by forcing the edge of the disk against the blade, mayreadily regulate the cutting.
The standard, it will be seen, is provided with a series of apertures a a, so as to allow the lever E to be adjusted for holding different-sized disks. The cutting edge B is provided with a shoulder D to prevent the blade crowding through the aperture holding it when the edge of the blade is forced against the disk.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A disk-sharpener consisting of a standard A having the points a on its lower end, a cutting-blade carried by the said standard, combined with a lever pivoted to the standard and a friction-wheel pivoted on a projection of the said lever, whereby the same may be swung against a disk to regulate the depth to which it is desired to have the blade cut, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES D. ARMSTRONG.
